Women's Basketball Uses Big Fourth Quarter To Come Back And Sweep Season Series Against Saints - WOU Athletics

LACEY, Wash. – Trailing by 10 entering the fourth quarter, the Western Oregon University women's basketball team put together a 17-5 run over the final 10 minutes of the game to rally and defeat Saint Martin's, 49-47, Saturday in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action inside Marcus Pavilion.

As it turned out, WOU (8-9, 4-6 GNAC) only had one lead all night and it came with 38 seconds left in the game. The Wolves also swept the season series from Saint Martin's for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

Saint Martin's (10-8, 2-7 GNAC) held a 12-point lead late in the third quarter before a layup by Amber Winkler closed the third and helped ignite the Wolves entering the fourth.

The run stretched right into the final frame with Madisyn Clark hitting two free throws and after two free throws by Makenna Gambee, the run was at 6-0 and WOU was within six at 42-36.

Following a layup by Emily Nelson pushed the lead back to eight, WOU reeled off the next seven points. Gambee hit a layup and Winkler added a running jumper. Winkler later hit a free throw before Alexis Wright closed the run with a layup to trim the deficit to one at 44-43 with 2:54 to play.

A three-pointer by Tierney DeDonatis moved Saint Martin's back in front by four, but that would be the final points the Saints would score.

Tresai McCarver hit a clutch three from the wing with a minute to play to make it a one-point game. Following a defensive stop, WOU called timeout and went with Clark who drove to the left side of the paint and was able to hit a tough layup to give the Wolves their first lead of the game at 48-47 with 38 seconds to play.

The Saints went inside the Chenoa Louie on the next possession and her layup attempt just rimmed out and WOU secured the layup. Saint Martin's brought the pressure and forced a turnover, but a missed shot by Louie was rebounded again by Cali McClave with five seconds to play. Forced to foul, the Saints sent McCarver to the line. She hit one of two to push the lead to two. Saint Martin's tried to hit DeDonatis in the corner for a potential game-winning three, but the ball was knocked out of bounds with one second to play. The Saints found Claire Dingus under the basket, but her contested layup attempt missed to secure the victory for the Wolves.

Saint Martin's got off to a quick start holding a 21-13 lead after the first quarter. It was a low scoring second quarter with the teams combining for just 12 points with the Saints holding the 7-5 edge and a 28-18 halftime lead.

WOU got as close as seven in the third quarter before Saint Martin's had the lead as high as 12 and then entered the fourth holding a 42-32 lead.

Clark went for a team-high 12 points and added two assists. Gambee reached double-figures with 10 points. McCarver collected nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Cali McClave had six points, four rebounds and two steals. Winkler chipped in five points and four rebounds, along with a block. Meadow Aragon had just three points, but pulled down 17 rebounds and sent back three blocks. WOU went 16-53 (30.2) from the field, 4-15 (26.7) from three and 13-23 (56.5) at the foul line. The Wolves held advantages in points off turnovers (13-7) and bench points (17-2).

Dingus led the Saints with 18 points and made it a double-double with 12 rebounds. Lauryn Morris tallied 14 points. Emily Nelson had 11 rebounds and five points. Saint Martin's went 18-62 (29) from the field, 4-18 (22.2) from three and 7-12 (58.3) at the foul line. The Saints held a 9-2 edge on second chance points and 8-5 advantage on fastbreak points.

WOU will return home to face Alaska Anchorage this coming Tuesday starting at 5:15 p.m. inside NPE Gym. The Wolves will then travel to play at Seattle Pacific on Thursday and Montana State Billings on Saturday to close the week.
