The NCAA canceled March basketball. We’re bringing it back. - NJ.com

March without college hoops? Without a bracket to fill out? Without picking teams and awaiting the results? It is impossible to comprehend, and so we’re taking matters into our own hands.

The NCAA might have canceled the greatest sporting event on the calendar – and, given the coronavirus pandemic, rightly so – but we have figured out a way to bring it back. This site and TheTylt.com have invited Brad Wachtel, one of the country’s most accurate bracketologists, to build us a field of 64 teams based on the results when the college basketball season ended abruptly last week.

Now, in the coming weeks, we’re leaving the rest up to you, at PlayTheTournament.com. Which teams will be the first-round Cinderellas? Which teams are bound for the Final Four? Do you hate Duke? Well, now is your chance to cast your vote against Coach K’s crew and send an underdog to the next round.

And when you vote, you’ll also have a chance to donate to coronavirus relief through the Center for Disaster Philanthropy’s COVID-19 Relief Fund.

Wachtel has created a bracket filled with intriguing matchups (download it here). Here are some of the details:

• The No. 1 seeds are Dayton (East), Kansas (South), Gonzaga (West) and Baylor (Midwest).
• Rutgers, one of the best stories of the college basketball season, has ended its 29-year tournament drought as the No. 10 seed in the Midwest Region. If the Scarlet Knights beat Colorado in the first round, they could have a chance to face powerhouse Duke for a spot in the Sweet 16. Will fans push Seton Hall and Big East Player of the Year Myles Powell deep into the tourney?
• Oregon, after a 24-7 season that included a perfect 17-0 record at home, earned the No. 4 seed in the West Region. That sets up an intriguing potential matchup if the seeds hold up in the Sweet 16 against Gonzaga, a program that dominated the competition en route to a 31-2 record.
• Three teams from Ohio have made the field, including surprising Dayton. Ohio State is the No. 5 seed in the East, while Cincinnati takes the American Athletic Conference’s automatic bid as the No. 12 seed in the South.
• Michigan State, a team that would be among the betting favorites had the actual tournament taken place, is a No. 3 seed in the Midwest. The Spartans wouldn’t have to face their in-state rival, sixth-seed Michigan, until the Final Four.
• Auburn, the No. 5 seed in the South, might have to take on the most talented team in the country – the No. 1 overall seed Kansas Jayhawks.

The worst part about the NCAA Tournament’s cancellation is losing three weeks of intense competition and lasting memories. This is an event that always delivers, from the first-round upsets to One Shining Moment after Monday night’s championship game in early April.

We can’t bring back all of that. But we have created something that, at the very least, will allow people to dream about the possibilities – and pick the teams they think should survive and advance.
