A look back at 2020 winter sports - WSIL TV

CARTERVILLE (WSIL) -- A lot has happened in the last week or so.

It feels weird not having games to cover but it's out of my control, out of your control.

The best thing we can do is stay healthy, take care of ourselves and refelct on the positives.

sure there has been disapointment but some cool stuff has happened too. Lets take a look at some cool happenings from our winter sports season.

Goreville boys basketball didn't get to compete for a state championship but it doesn't mean it wasn't a special season. They'll always be remembered as a final four team, something many teams would love just to say that.

We had a lot of good teams with great seasons. We had buzzer beaters, we had upsets, we had milestones, and some records stood for more than 40 years.

On the girls side, we watched three seniors close out remarkable careers with a third place finish.

Carterville gave our area a state champion in cheerleading.

Three local athletes shined in the classroom as well, bringing home all-state academic honors.

On the mat we had three local grapplers medal at state.

Collegiately SIU men's basketball was picked to finish tenth and they were a five seed in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. They brought life back into the Banterra Center. We saw a last second game winner that rocked an arena and fans are excitexd for the future.

If you had a chance to check out John A. Logan men's basketball before the the secret got out, you saw futere division one and maybe an NBA player develop right in your own backyard. A what might have been will be the chatter but think about what they did, going undefeated in conference play, something that hadn't happend in thirty plus years.

Salukis baseball had their best start since 2012, SIU softball had won 9 in a row and Coach Blaylock picked up career win number 700. Logan baseball was 20-1 so lets stop focusing on what might have been and step back and say wow look at what they did, pretty cool because some athletes didn't get to put on the cleats or lift the bat off their shoulder.

So lets not forget what our athletes have accomplished, we'lll weather this storm, and write new stories and break new records, it's just a matter of time.
