Sunday afternoon and evening thunderstorm chances
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop in parts of central and southern Minnesota plus western Wisconsin as we go through Sunday afternoon and evening. In the Twin Cities metro area our thunderstorm chances increase by late Sunday afternoon and periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected Sunday evening and overnight Sunday night.
The NWS Storm Prediction Center shows a slight risk of severe weather Sunday and Sunday night in southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area, and parts of western Wisconsin. Here’s the Twin Cities NWS discussion of the severe weather outlook:
Scattered severe thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening/Sunday night in the slight risk area (shaded yellow). A marginal risk of severe weather exists in the dark-green shaded area in central Minnesota, parts of northern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin. Marginal risk means that an isolated severe thunderstorm is possible.
Some areas may also see heavy rain at times.

Sticky Sunday afternoon
Highs in the upper 80s are expected across much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin Sunday afternoon. Some spots far western Minnesota could top 90 degrees. Highs in the upper 70s are expected along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Dew points in the mid to upper 60s will spread across southern and central Minnesota plus western Wisconsin Sunday afternoon, so it’ll feel a bit sticky. It’ll also be a breezy afternoon, with wind gusts of 18-25 mph. Much higher gusts can be expected near any t-storms that develop.
The week ahead
Twin Cities metro area highs are projected to reach the lower 90s Monday and Tuesday, followed by upper 80s Wednesday and Thursday, then lower 90s again on Friday. The metro area could see scattered showers/t-storms early Monday morning and also late Monday afternoon and Monday evening. There’ll be a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms each day from Tuesday through Friday, but we’ll have many dry hours too.
Warm weather continues
The Twin Cities metro area may top 90 degrees next Saturday, which is the Fourth of July. The warmth may linger well into July. The NWS Climate Prediction Center shows a strong tendency toward above-normal temps in Minnesota and Wisconsin from July 5 through July 11:
