In regard to the 2020 college football season, Scott Barnes’ top preference is a season that plays out as scheduled.
But if it means playing games without spectators, the Oregon State athletic director favors delaying a start to the season if there’s a possibility of opening games to fans.
And it’s not just about money, either. Well, it is. But there’s more.
Oregon State is scheduled to start the 2020 season on Sept. 3 at Oklahoma State. The Beavers’ first home game is Sept. 12 against Colorado State. OSU has three home games scheduled for September.
This scenario was presented to Barnes: Your preference if Oregon State starts the season on time but no fans in the stadium, or delay a month to allow for possibility of stadium spectators.
Barnes hesitates at first, because fans don’t enter into the equation until the game is safe for players due to coronavirus concerns.
“We are going to comply and take the most responsible measures,” Barnes said.
Yes, of course, player safety is first. Provided that is assured, then back to the original question: on-time start with no fans, or delayed start with a possibility of spectators? Barnes was asked if he preferred the latter.
“That’s fair, yes,” he said.
Barnes wants to be clear, though, that favoring a later start isn’t just about the lost revenue.
“When that conversation comes up, it’s always about revenue. And my goodness, it is about revenue,” Barnes said. “But if you were to ask athletes that question about fans. That’s really, really important to them. They want fans at their games.”
