A man who was rescued from a sailboat on Carter Lake in May died a day later at the hospital, the Larimer County Coroner’s Office announced Tuesday.
The man was identified as Ralph M. Martin, 75, of Longmont. His death was ruled an accident caused by hypoxic organ injury, multiple blunt force injuries and sudden cardiac death during rescue, the coroner’s office said. His injuries were caused by getting caught in sailboat rigging during a windstorm on the lake.
Martin was trapped in the rigging of a sailboat that was docked at the marina at Carter Lake the evening of May 19, according to the Loveland Fire Rescue Authority. First responders from the Loveland and Berthoud fire departments and other agencies responded to the scene and attempted to conduct a rope rescue, but were unsuccessful due to windy conditions on the lake.
They ultimately got Martin out by bringing the sailboat to shore and tipping it onto its side. He then went into cardiac arrest, according to Loveland Fire.
Martin was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies, where he died on May 20, the coroner’s office said.
