PITTSBURGH — In the middle of an Instagram post about his recovery from cancer, outlook on life and his own well-being, James Conner also showed off his very impressive back muscles last week.
The image rippled through Steelers social media, generating plenty of optimism about his preparation for a potential 2020 season and, Conner said, some skepticism about his ability to play with that much muscle mass.
But before he got into the functionality of his offseason program, Conner played around with a reporter’s framing of the question.
“Nah man, it’s just the angle. I ain’t been working out,” he said laughing. "I just — but nah. Honestly, a lot of people commented on it saying, you know, I’m gonna be stiff and all this. No, i’m a professional and I know how to work out. It’s partially genetics, but I also been putting a lot of work into the weight room. And it’s also just the way I flexed it.
"So it was nothing. There’s a lot of people look like that.”
Earlier in the same conference call on Tuesday, Conner noted that he emphasizes mental health and said he’s improved his relationship with God this offseason.
The one-time Pro Bowl running back is especially making the most of workouts during quarantine, he said, as he’s largely got little else to focus on. In fact, it was in mid-March that he truly tucked into this year’s offseason.
Conner fought through shoulder and knee injuries last season, missing six games and seemingly suffering in others.
“The quarantine helped me get away from all distractions," Conner said. And not necessarily that they’re all distractions, but it’s just — staying home to have something to cook at home ... it forces people to stay home. So with the time that you’re home, I’m just trying to get better.”
