As of Monday afternoon, Leonard Fournette, Melvin Gordon, Ronald Jones and Sony Michel are all still free agents. That, combined with the fact that the NFL Draft is still more than a month away means it's a bit risky to call anyone an offseason winner just yet. Well, except maybe James Conner. He got to stay in Arizona and say goodbye to Chase Edmonds. That makes him one of the biggest winners so far, but he's still a veteran running back with an extensive injury history, so he can't crack my top 20 in the latest update.
Two backs who are in the top 20, and have risen in every update since September, are Javonte Williams and Michael Carter. And both look to be benefiting from free agency, at least so far.
Williams in particular has had an interesting offseason. All reports seem to indicate that Gordon will not be back in Denver, and currently the Broncos plan on splitting carries between Williams and Mike Boone. That should be a big increase in workload, and the team's acquisition of Russell Wilson should mean a lot more scoring opportunities. Those changes were enough to edge Williams ahead of D'Andre Swift for the third spot and he's not far behind Najee Harris at all. Of course, if Gordon does return, Williams may fall back to fourth.
Carter's New York Jets did bring back their free agent veteran, but the fact that they brought back Tevin Coleman may actually be a good thing. Coleman, Ty Johnson, and the other backs on the roster simply aren't threats to Carter being a top-20 running back this year with top-12 upside. I was more concerned the team would bring in a legitimate 1B, which Coleman is not.
Carter sneaks up to RB14 in my latest update, but that is an area that is very dependent on where your team stands. Carter's age makes him much more appealing to a rebuilding squad, but there are older backs who would probably be better for a contender. That being said, if Carter has a month of top-12 production to start the season, I would expect he'll move into everyone's top 10 in Dynasty. In other words, he still has upside beyond his current ranking.
