Showers and thunderstorms today
A storm system is moving through the region, bringing clouds and rain chances to the area for our Tuesday. We'll have showers in the area mainly in the late morning and afternoon. As a cold front approaches in the mid-afternoon, thunderstorms will develop and rumble through the heart of our area, possibly becoming strong to severe at times. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible in some of those storms, and the primary time frame of concern will be 4:00 PM through 9:00 PM. Right now, our area is in the Slight Risk category (2 of 5) for severe weather in the Storm Prediction Center's latest outlook. Clouds will hold temperatures down a bit compared to the past few days and upper 70s are expected this afternoon with a slight south breeze.
A bright, quiet midweek
High pressure will slide into the Upper Mississippi Valley for the next couple of days, bringing tranquil sunshine and some generally pleasant mid-summer weather to the area. We'll have occasional sun and clouds with lower humidity levels on Wednesday with high temperatures in the very mild upper 70s before heavier humidity begins to trickle in on Thursday when we again see some lower 80s for afternoon temperatures.
Heat returns Friday
A much warmer, more humid air mass will build in for Friday and the weekend as terms like oppressive, tropical, steamy, and sticky will be used to describe our increasingly humid weather. Look for sunshine with a few isolated thunderstorms Friday afternoon and high temperatures will reach the mid and upper 80s.
A hot and humid weekend
A warm, tropical air mass will remain planted in the region through the weekend bringing some of the steamy, sultry type of weather we experienced early last weekend when dew point temperatures were well into the 70s and heat indices were in the triple digits. Look for isolated thunderstorms on Saturday with a few more thunderstorms possible during the day Sunday and high temperatures will be in the lower 90s.
