The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association isn’t abandoning its intention to start fall high school sports as usual.
But, it is offering some other options.
The PIAA, which held a Board of Directors meeting on Wednesday, opened the door for postponed start dates and varied scheduling models throughout the state.
“In addressing the COVID-19 crisis and how it has affected the 67 counties differently, PIAA understands the flexibility needed by school districts to make localized measured decisions, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach,” the PIAA said in a news release.
Schools, leagues or conferences can push back the start of practices and competitions, according to the PIAA.
The options detailed in the release are:
The "regular start" with heat acclimatization on Aug. 10 and opening practices on Aug. 17. Contests can start Aug. 20 for golf, Aug. 24 for girls tennis, Aug. 28 for football, and Sept. 4 for cross country, girls volleyball, field hockey and soccer.
An “alternative start” with competition beginning Sept. 18 for football and Sept. 14 for the other fall sports. Teams are still required to complete the mandated minimum preseason, which is three days for golf, one week for tennis and three weeks for the other fall sports.
The PIAA also outlined a “hybrid start” approach, where the school, league or conference creates its own timetables (within practice guidelines), with competition beginning no later than Oct. 5 unless otherwise cleared by the local district.
"As we continue to move forward, PIAA will remain flexible in considering that certain sports may be impacted differently and post-season play may need to be modified," the release states.
Prior to posting its latest statement, the PIAA board approved the minutes of its Sports Medicine Advisory Committee, which OK’d the start of fall sports as long as safety guidelines are followed.
Those guidelines do not include spectators at contests. Find the 25-page guideline document here.
The PIAA announced on July 15 that it would proceed with its plans to conduct a fall season “unless otherwise directed by the Commonwealth.”
The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association has pushed back its fall start and made alterations to its postseason schedule.
