High rain chances gradually taper later this week - KATC Lafayette News

Deep tropical moisture left over in the Gulf of Mexico in the wake of Hurricane Hanna will keep a very good chance of more tropical showers and storms for Acadiana over the next couple of days, but brighter skies are ahead later this week.

Look for the possibility of a few more tropical showers to develop overnight across the area into Tuesday morning, especially initiating and near the coastal parishes.

The chance of scattered showers and a few storms remains high for our Tuesday, near 80%, but the day should not be a complete washout.

Once again, there will be the chance of some locally heavy downpours, but flooding rains are not expected.

Elevated rain chances will stay into Wednesday, but won't be quite as high (closer to 60%) with a few more intervals of sun also expected.

A somewhat drier and more stable air mass will over into the region from the Gulf of Mexico toward the end of the week thereby allow for fewer showers (20-30%), more sun and consequently, hotter more summer-like temperatures.

The weekend promises to start with relatively low rain chances but a weak frontal trough approaching from the northwest Saturday night into Sunday should lead to a better chance of storms returning by Sunday.

See the KATC 10 Day Forecast for the latest.

Meanwhile in the tropics, a relatively large area of disturbed weather accompanied by broad low pressure did not get any better organized Monday and the National Hurricane Center actually lowered the chance of development to 80% Monday afternoon...down from 90% this weekend.

Nonetheless, this system has a very good chance of some development possibly impacting portions of the Caribbean Wednesday through Friday, but the forecast beyond that remains questionable.

It remains too early to tell whether this system and in what form could be a U.S. and/or Gulf of Mexico threat, but that is certainly a possibility later this weekend into early next week.
