The CIAC announced its plan for fall sports this year, looking at reduced game schedules in each sport and a start date of Sept. 24, about two weeks later than normal.
Here are a few quick takeaways:
First date for larger practice groups (up to 15): Aug. 17 (football), Aug. 27 (all other sports)
First date full team practice: Sept. 11
First competition: Sept. 24 (all sports)
Maximum number of games during regular season: Football (6), all other sports (12)
Thanksgiving: The last date for regular season football is Oct. 30, with the state tournament ending on Nov. 15. That means the tradition of Thanksgiving football this year is canceled.
On scheduling games:
“All contests will be scheduled regionally. The CIAC will support our member leagues and individual schools over the next few weeks to develop regional schedules. Regional play will limit travel and mitigate the potential spread of any positive cases across the state. Additionally, regional play will support what is anticipated to be a challenging transportation period for our member schools. Additionally, all CIAC games will be played among CIAC member schools. No out-of-state competition will be sanctioned for fall sport contests by CIAC.”
State tournaments: Scheduled to be completed by Nov. 15 in all sports
Spectators: No statewide directive on fan attendance as CIAC leaves such decisions up to the discretion of each school district.
HEALTH PROTOCOLS
Masks: Not advised when engaging in “vigorous activity”, but should be at all other times.
Sports physicals: The CIAC extended the validity of a past physical to 15 months, meaning an athlete that had a valid physical last year will not need a new one to compete this fall.
Scheduling: Competition should be restricted to the 10 schools within close proximity.
