SE: She's Back – Catching up with Natasha Johnson of K-State Rowing - K-StateSports.com

Natasha Johnson spoke with K-State Sports Extra's Austin Siegel about returning to Manhattan after missing out on her senior season due to COVID-19. The 2019 Big 12 silver medalist in the 2v8+ boat has also grabbed wins at the SIRA's and Sunflower Showdown in her K-State career.

The conversation has been condensed and edited for clarity.

AS: Since rowing isn't a sport that most student-athletes pick up until college, what sparked your decision to join the team when you arrived in Manhattan?

NJ: I always wanted to do a sport in college, and I wasn't quite good enough at the other ones in high school. So, I decided that I might as well try rowing. It seemed like a good opportunity. They told me it was hard work and I've always liked challenges, so I thought why not?

AS: In your six years with K-State rowing, what's it been like to see this team grow?

NJ: Different girls come and go, so it's always a changing environment. Once each senior class leaves, it's always a little different. We learn from that senior class, but the other classes also shape the team too, so we definitely all grow together.

AS: What were some of the biggest factors behind your decision to come back to K-State?

NJ: Well, I wanted to change my major, so I was going back to Kansas State for nursing anyway. I had to finish some of my prerequisites. Since I was already doing school, I thought why not go ahead and keep rowing?

AS: What do you think has been the highlight of you career at K-State so far?

NJ: That silver medal at Big 12s in 2019 would probably be the highlight. It was such a good race and our boat just flowed so smoothly. It was the best race of my career and I would love to be in a boat that races like that in this upcoming season.

AS: I'm sure that race is a pretty vivid memory for you, but are there any others where everything just sort of came together?

NJ: Each race is a little different. Usually towards the beginning of the season, we have races where there are points where we go through some difficulties. We fine tune those with more practice. So, those races towards the end of the season always seem to flow really well, especially if you compare them to the beginning of the year.

AS: Obviously, last year was a really abbreviated season for your team, but coming out of spring camp and your last race of the season, how were you feeling about the group of girls that you had going into what was supposed to be your senior year?

NJ: We felt really good – We had that week in Sacramento to work out some the kinks that we had towards the beginning of the week and things were starting to flow really smoothly. We were all really excited to see what we could do with the changes that we had made. So, it was fairly disappointing for everybody when we couldn't see all that hard work that we put in through another race.

AS: Have you discussed with your teammates some of your expectations for what you might be able to accomplish next season?

NJ: With all of the uncertainty around COVID-19, I don't think we really know what to expect. We're just trying to go with the flow and we're a really flexible team. So, we're just waiting to see the next thing that's going to be thrown at us and deal with it as it comes.

AS: Outside of racing, what has you most excited about returning to the rowing team?

NJ: It's always nice to be around my teammates, because those are the majority of my friends at K-State. We spend so much time together, so it's just going to be nice to be around them because we haven't really seen much of each other since the end of spring break. I'm looking forward to spending more time with them, mostly.

AS: Do you have a favorite course or a favorite meet that you're looking forward to?

NJ: My favorite course would have to be in Oak Ridge, Tennessee – I'm definitely looking forward to rowing there again.

AS: I was hoping you were going to say the one down in my hometown of Sarasota, Florida.

NJ: Well if it makes you feel any better, that's my second favorite course. They're pretty close but Oak Ridge probably beats it by just a little bit.

AS: You touched on academics a little bit, but what are you most excited about with your nursing major and some of your on-campus activities next year?

NJ: I'm one of the weird ones that actually kind of likes school, so I'm excited to learn about a subject that I care a lot about, because mechanical engineering I figured out about halfway through college that it wasn't quite right for me. I stuck with it to get the degree, but I'm excited to be able to learn about something that I really care about.
