Broad Area of Low Pressure Could Become a Tropical Depression Later This Week
  • A broad area of low pressure will bring showers and storms to the Southeast early this week.
  • Localized heavy rainfall is possible in some areas.
  • There is a chance this system could spur the development of a tropical depression later this week.

An area of low pressure will bring numerous showers and storms to the Southeast early this week, and there is some chance it might eventually organize into a tropical depression.

The broad area of low pressure is located near the northern Gulf Coast right now. It only has a small chance of organizing into a tropical depression before it moves inland by Monday, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Area to Watch

(The potential area of tropical development according to the latest National Hurricane Center outlook is shown by the polygon, color-coded by the chance of development over the next five days. An "X" indicates the location of a current disturbance. )

Once the area of low pressure tracks northeastward toward the Southeast coast later this week, it might have to be watched for possible organization into a tropical depression. The NHC says conditions could be more favorable for development if the area of low pressure moves far enough off the coast of the Carolinas.

There is also the possibility that the low tracks inland over the Southeast, which would limit the chance of tropical development.

Regardless of what happens, there will numerous showers and storms from the northern Gulf Coast to the Southeast coast early this week.

Current Radar, Watches and Warnings

Many areas from the lower Mississippi Valley into parts of the Southeast could see at least an inch of rain through Wednesday. Heavier totals are possible where bands of rain or clusters of thunderstorms stall for a few hours, which could lead to local flash flooding.
