LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Jefferson County Public Schools is a half-step closer to having a later start date this school year.
A district calendar committee briefly discussed moving the first day of school from Aug. 12 to the last week of August, but adjourned without taking a vote Wednesday afternoon.
The initial proposal would start Aug. 26 and end May 27 for students, and would ax the fall break typically scheduled in early October.
Committee members said families tend to take vacations during the break and may already have reservations, encouraging the district to leave one of the days as a day off.
An amended calendar that would start Aug. 25 and have Oct. 2 off gained traction before Jimmy Adams, the district's head of human resources, said he would rework the proposal.

Any changes need to be approved by the JCPS school board.
If the JCPS school board signs off on the change, Kentucky's largest district will join a group of districts starting later than expected to make more time to craft reopening plans.
Fayette County, the state's second-largest district, said Wednesday it will aim for an Aug. 24 start date — slightly later than when it typically returns to classrooms.
"... this change allows us to take advantage of the flexibility afforded in state law to have a shorter school year, which could prove crucial if intermittent closures are required," FCPS Superintendent Manny Caulk wrote in a letter to families.
State law allows Kentucky districts to have fewer than the required 170 school days if school starts after the closest Monday to Aug. 26, as long as it hits at least 1,062 instructional hours by the end of the year.
