The mystery surrounding Roberto Osuna seemed to gain clarity on Saturday. The Astros closer collected three outs to conclude a 7-2 win against the Mariners after apparently lobbying pitching coach Brent Strom for an appearance.
Houston originally had its upcoming two-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers as a target for Osuna’s return. Instead, Osuna tossed 16 pitches on Saturday, appearing in as easy a situation as possible. The Astros held a five-run lead when he entered.
Bryan Abreu warmed up in the bullpen throughout Osuna’s outing in case the closer encountered trouble. Osuna allowed a ringing, two-out triple to J.P. Crawford for the only blemish on his line. His fastball velocity sat from 90-92 mph.
Osuna threw off the mound once during summer camp workouts. Questions surrounded whether he’d even be included on the team’s opening day roster. Manager Dusty Baker said Osuna arrived to camp late and in “fair shape.” Osuna did little but run wind sprints and play long toss for most of the Astros’ three-week ramp up.
On Thursday, general manager James Click disagreed with an assertion that Osuna was “out of shape.” He pointed to Osuna’s intake testing process, which Click claimed took longer than usual. All players were tested for COVID-19 and quarantined for 24-48 hours upon their arrival before summer camp.
On Saturday, after Osuna’s debut, Baker revealed that Osuna’s initial intake test results were delayed, setting him back “probably a week” in the three-week ramp up. Osuna was seen inside Minute Maid Park as early as July 9 — the team’s fifth day of workouts.
“He was behind,” Baker said on Saturday. “But he told (pitching coach Brent Strom) that he was ready today. We tried to get him a low-impact, low-leverage type outing before his real outings to save the game. That always helps to get those jitters out of you.”
