SACRAMENTO — Breezy winds and temperatures reaching into the triple digits are expected for parts of the Sacramento Valley later this week, according to a forecast from the National Weather Service.
Onshore winds were expected to develop Monday and shift to the north on Tuesday, causing gusts of up to 25 miles per hour, with continued northerly movement Wednesday reaching up to 35 miles per hour. Daytime humidity will be between 15 and 30% Tuesday, before decreasing slightly. Chico is forecast to have 13% humidity Wednesday.
Combined with dry conditions, an increased fire risk is anticipated from Tuesday through Wednesday. The weather service reminds people to keep vehicles off of dry grass and use outdoor equipment with proper caution.
Moderate heat risk will be present in the latter stages of the week, beginning Thursday with a push into the upper 90 degrees and lower 100s. The weather service expects both Chico and Oroville to peak at 102 degrees Friday and remain over 100 degrees through the weekend.
On Friday, parts of Butte County are projected to be a high risk for heat, defined as, “much of the population, especially those who are heat sensitive and those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.”
These temperatures are expected to last through the weekend, with overnight lows forecast in the mid 60s to lower 70s.
To combat the heat, the weather service recommends staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors and continuing to check on elderly people, children and pets.
