Tropical Storm Cristobal was no stronger but was making its presence felt along the Gulf Coast on Sunday morning.
The National Hurricane Center said squalls with tropical storm force winds (39 mph and higher) had reached the coast, and conditions would continue to worsen through the day.
Cristobal had winds of 50 mph on Sunday morning as it continued on a path northward.
Cristobal is expected to make landfall later today in Louisiana, but much of its worst weather was located far to the east of its center, which means that Mississippi and parts of Alabama will have to be on guard.
Cristobal will bring winds up to 50 mph, up to a foot of rain, storm surge and tornadoes to parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida today.
As of 7 a.m. CDT Sunday, Tropical Storm Cristobal was located about 70 miles south of Grand Isle, La., and was moving north at 12 mph.
Cristobal had winds of 50 mph, which is unchanged from Saturday.
The hurricane center said that little change in strength is anticipated before Cristobal makes landfall later today.
Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 205 miles mainly east of the center. The hurricane center said a National Ocean Service station at the Southwest Pass of the Mississippi River recently reported sustained winds of 47 mph and a gust of 62 mph at an elevation of 78 feet.
Cristobal will continue to track northward but could take a turn to the north-northwest later today or tonight, the hurricane center said.
On the forecast path Cristobal will approach the coast today, and make landfall late today and continue to move inland through tonight.
Here are the watches and warnings as of Sunday morning:
* A storm surge warning is in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Ocean Springs, Miss., and Lake Borgne.
* A storm surge watch is in effect from east of Morgan City, La., to the mouth of the Mississippi River.
* A tropical storm warning is in effect from Intracoastal City, La., to the Okaloosa/Walton County line in Florida, and includes Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.
The hurricane center said 3 to 5 feet of storm surge will be possible along the coast from the mouth of the Mississippi River to Ocean Springs, Miss., with lesser amounts elsewhere.
However, the Alabama coast and Mobile Bay could see 1 to 3 feet as well.
Cristobal could also being 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, with isolated areas getting up to a foot.
Tornadoes will also be possible today in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. as rain bands from Cristobal move inland.
A tornado blamed on Cristobal struck the Orlando area on Saturday, causing some damage.
