Albany, N.Y. — Medical schools in all of New York can reopen on June 22, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today.
The schools will have to follow appropriate precautions and make safety preparations, but will be able to welcome new students this summer and fall. Cuomo’s office did not provide any further details on what precautions it expects.
The move on medical schools appears to be a tweak to New York’s phased reopening plan. Education has been consistently listed as part of the fourth and final phase of the restart plan and Cuomo has said repeatedly that reopening schools is complex.
Much of the state, including Central New York, is currently in the second phase of the restart plan. Other regions are close to entering phase two.
With a pause of at least two weeks between phases, the earliest phase four could begin in any region is late June.
Schools in New York first closed in March to help slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Students have been learning remotely since then.
In May, Cuomo canceled in-person summer school, although classes can take place online.
But just yesterday, Cuomo said summer camps in the state will be allowed to open June 29. No decision has been made yet on sleep-away camps.
Colleges in New York are taking different approaches to the fall.
Syracuse University is preparing for students to return to campus in person. Ithaca College has said it won’t bring back students until October.
