Strike over, it's back to work
"Possessed of a Johnny-Get-Your-Broom spirit and a determination to make the dirt fly," several hundred city workers employed in the bureaus of parks and streets, who had been on strike for 17 days, returned to their jobs and began the work of making Albany's streets clean again, a job that was estimated to most likely take at least a week to accomplish. Fewer than two dozen men failed to resume their duties, but it was explained that they had simply found work elsewhere while the strike was going on. An agreement was reached late the night before during a meeting between John J. Moran, president of City Laborers' Union 601, and Wallace Greenalch, commissioner of the Department of Public Works. The settlement involved a dollar a day increase in wages for each man and the promise of "straight time," or normal working hours.

Campus interfaith center
A new interfaith center was expected to open near the University at Albany campus before the fall semester. A fund drive was to begin soon to raise the $75,000 needed to purchase, repair and remodel the center. The center had its beginnings when community representatives of Roman Catholic, Protestant and Jewish groups began to plan facilities for large worship services off campus. Plans called for the purchase of the Chapel House, the old Barnes estate owned by the Capital Area Council of Churches, plus an additional two acres owned by the university's Faculty-Student Association. The facility would provide counseling and study and sanctuary activities by fall. Specifics had not been worked out, but it was certain all of the campus ministers would have offices in the building, a base from which to direct their activities.
