Former CSU running back Marvin Kinsey Jr. signs CFL contract after “learning from mistakes” - Loveland Reporter-Herald

Marvin Kinsey Jr. knew he was in the wrong last season.

Nonetheless, the former Colorado State running back never imagined the program would dismiss him from the team amid his prolific campaign –– which it did shortly after issuing him an indefinite suspension in the thick of Mountain West Conference play.

From an outside perspective, Kinsey’s removal may have appeared inevitable, considering the Georgia native had already stepped out of line a few times before 2019.

But to the agile rusher, going from leading the Mountain West in rushing one day to sitting at home the next was certainly difficult to fathom.

“I was shocked,” Kinsey said. “I obviously know what I did. But I was shocked. I thought the team was going to keep me on the team. I was doing so well for the team, and I felt like they turned their back on me.”

With 703 rushing yards in seven games under his belt, Kinsey’s time in the collegiate realm expired just as the speedster began reaching his potential.

Though the senior only had himself to blame for the premature departure, he didn’t use the unfortunate development as an excuse to give up or wallow in self-pity.

Instead, Kinsey utilized the humbling circumstance to put his head down and grind even harder while remaining focused on taking his talents to the next level.

“When they kicked me off the team, it motivated me even more,” he said. “I didn’t take any time off. I went straight to workouts, and I hit my agent up. He said stuff like this happens, and you just have to learn from your mistakes, and he set me up with working out every day up until this point, so when the time comes, I’ll be ready.”

With his back against the wall as his future in football hung in the balance, Kinsey got down to business and commenced individual training the moment CSU dismissed him –– and he never stopped.

Since his exit, Kinsey has been improving everything from his footwork, to speed, to strength on a two-hour, six-days-per-week schedule. Those efforts, along with his agent Michael Hoffman’s endeavors to place Kinsey on professional radars, recently paid off as the running back signed a contract with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League earlier this week.

Following months of hard work, Kinsey obtained the opportunity he needed to resurrect his career.

“I got a call from the head coach,” Kinsey said. “He hit me up and was like I love your explosiveness and how you run the ball and basically that we would love to have you. Then we just went from there. I’m so grateful.”

As one can see from his style of play on the field, Kinsey possesses ultimate confidence in his abilities. With that in mind, the running back will arrive in Edmonton with hopes of instantaneously serving as a starter.

In addition to thriving on his new team, Kinsey also aspires to use the CFL as a stepping stone to eventually grabbing the NFL’s attention.

“Anytime I go to a team, I feel like I’m there to compete for a starting job,” Kinsey said. “So, that’s what I plan on doing with this team. I definitely want to do whatever I can to help the team out and do what I have to do to get to the NFL at some point.”

Kinsey never allowed himself to become a professional afterthought despite the red flags surrounding his reputation.

Perhaps the playmaker needed a bit of a wake-up call to realize that there is much more required to succeed in athletics than producing on the field.

Now, as the running back embarks on his new journey, he believes his story can inspire others to embrace their mistakes. As Kinsey sees it, there is always a second chance at the end of the tunnel if one does everything in their power to seize it.

“When CSU kicked me off, I knew it wasn’t the end of the world,” he said. “If you do what you’re supposed to do, there is always hope. That’s the case for me, and maybe I can use this as an example for other kids. I’m pretty sure everybody thought it was over for me, but God had another plan.”
