The Reds are hoping to jump-start the 2020 season with the loosening of regulations from the COVID-19 pandemic. The team has scheduled a doubleheader for June 27, followed by a single game on June 28.

The Jasper Reds are all but officially back.

Reds business manager Bob Alles told The Herald on Monday that he signed paperwork with the city of Huntingburg for the Reds to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on June 27 against the Hoosier Townball Association, and another game the next day against the Louisville Cubs. Both games are scheduled for League Stadium.

Alles is waiting to receive the liability insurance policy for this year, otherwise the team won’t play. While things can change, he is excited that the team is going to be back in action.

“Basically, my whole life, I remember Jasper Reds baseball,” Alles said. “For our family — my dad (Jerome, “Chick”) played for years. Myself and three of my brothers (Tom, Bill and Jerry), they all played for years, and so, it’s kind of been a family thing. I’m very happy that we’re able to make it.”

The last time the Reds did not have a season was in 1966. Alles noted that the Reds are playing games this year for the sake of keeping the streak of seasons in play going. This is a later start time than usual. The Reds normally start around Memorial Day weekend or right after that and play about 20 games. They’re looking to get about 10 to 12 games in this year.

Alles checked with players, opponents and umpires and got positive vibes from everyone. COVID-19 cases are on the rise in some states, and he’s worried as things can change on that front. He knows this is a serious, legitimate concern.

“If somebody would test positive or something, that would more than likely shut us down,” he said. “I’m hoping that doesn’t happen, but it’s a real possibility, I guess you might say.”

The 2020 Reds will have a local element to them as well. Carter Stamm and Reece Bauer graduated from Jasper and Northeast Dubois, respectively, this year. Tucker Schank graduated from Southridge in 2019 and Bo Daves, a 2006 Pike Central graduate, is scheduled to be back this year as well.

Alles said there’s currently about 13 players set to play for the Reds this summer, and he’s hoping to add four or five more. He’s hoping to receive the insurance policy sometime this week, and added they’re also looking at games with other teams, including teams from Illinois and Lexington, Ky., and the Reds might possibly see competition from Owensboro.

He added that going to Wichita, Kansas, for the National Baseball Congress World Series, though, is completely out of the question.

Alles knows the players are not going to be on top of their game, and is just asking them to do what they can do. He thinks it’s unrealistic to expects his players to be as sharp as they are in a normal year, given that players haven’t played.

“However, the other teams are going to be in the same boat, that is true,” Alles said. “I think the quality of play is not going to be as good, at least at the start, as it generally is just because people haven’t been playing, haven’t been taking ground balls, that kind of stuff. I suspect that there will be more errors and probably less contact at the plate, at least at the very, very start for that reason.”
