UTRGV (10-7, 2-0) returns to Tarleton's Potishman-Lard Tennis Courts for the third time this season to face the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Ladyjacks (8-7, 1-1 WAC Southwest) on Saturday at 9 a.m. and the Tarleton Texans (15-4, 2-0 WAC Southwest) at 12 p.m. Sunday.
The Vaqueros lost three straight matches last weekend, their longest such skid this season, but they've reset mentally and are ready to turn the tides.
"We learned a lot from that," UTRGV head coach West Nott said. "We regrouped, got everyone on the same page mentally, got some office time to be one-on-one with the players. I think we were a little tentative last weekend. We want to play looser this week and a little more aggressive, and just handle the setbacks better. I'm hopeful this team will bounce back this weekend."
Tarleton and UTRGV are the only teams yet to drop a WAC Southwest match. The Vaqueros are 0-3 all-time against the Texans and dropped a match 0-7 in February in Stephenville. SFA leads the all-time series against UTRGV 3-14 and has won the last four matchups between the programs.
Nott wants the team to focus on getting back to their strong doubles play and using that to set the tone for the rest of the match. Freshman Marjorie Souza, sophomores Stefanie Wilske and Isabelle Bahr and senior Katarina Sasaroga picked up wins over the weekend and will anchor UTRGV as it gets back into matches that will affect conference standings.
The Vaqueros know they'll be facing two tough and competitive teams, but they also know they can bring the same kind of resiliency to the courts.
"For us, it's just the same message – try to be gritty out there, run down every ball, have a super positive attitude especially when bad things happen on the court and just root each other on," Nott said. "If we can control the things we can control, good things will happen."
Souza said that UTRGV's familiarity with Tarleton's courts will be beneficial. She's proud of the energy the Vaqueros consistently bring to every practice and every match, and she believes if they can keep that energy high this weekend, they can get back on the right track.
"It's really good that we played there two weekends before this one because now we know the courts, we know the winds, we know how things work there, so it makes us comfortable playing there, especially since it's the WAC season," Souza said. "We are really excited for this weekend. We are expecting to do a good job and to bring a lot of energy."
