"To say that I'm excited would be an understatement!" Palm said about returning to Bakersfield. "After being 900 miles away in Texas for so long, I have definitely grown to miss my support back at home. It's a great feeling to know that I'll be making Bakersfield even more proud of this amazing university and following in my dad's footsteps of being a Roadrunner!"
A graduate of Bakersfield High School, Palm was a three-time First Team All-League honoree while also claiming a pair of First Team All-Area nods in her time as a Driller. When her prep career ended, Palm headed off to UTEP where she enjoyed an outstanding rookie campaign in 2020.
On the way to an All-Conference honor, the six-foot outside hitter was one of the Miners' leaders in points and kills, but her serving skills really set Palm apart. She ranked third in C-USA and led the team with 28 total service aces on the year and her average of 0.49 aces per set reset UTEP's single-season record.
"We are thrilled to welcome Ava to our volleyball program and back to Bakersfield," said Giovana Melo, Head Coach at CSUB. "Ava is athletic, she has had experience playing at a D1 level, and she is a competitor. We believe Ava can help elevate our program, not just on the court, but in the community."
"The energy of the team and coaching staff could not have felt more right for me," Palm added about her decision to play for CSUB. "What stood out the most about this program was how tight-knit the players' relationships with each other and with the coaches were. Watching them grind in practice and the weight-room really showed me what kind of culture they are creating here and I am so happy I chose to be a part of it!
After playing 46 matches in the UTEP Orange and Blue, Palm will return to Bakersfield this summer ahead of her first season in the CSUB Blue and Gold. She has deep roots in Kern County and will enjoy playing in front of her home crowd once again.
Palm's ties to CSUB and Bakersfield includes her father, Vance Palm, who was a member of the CSUB men's basketball team (1986-88). Vance is still active with his alma mater as he can regularly be heard on Bakersfield's ESPN broadcasts as a play-by-play announcer or color analyst.
Melo also talked about the importance of having talented local athletes on the team: "We have had some impactful players from Bakersfield in our program and we are excited to add Ava to that group. We are excited for the future of our program. The Big West is a fun conference to compete in and we are looking forward to getting our community to our matches."
Melo, Palm, and the rest of the `Runners are working hard to be prepared for another run at the Big West Conference this Fall. Be on the lookout for a 2022 CSUB volleyball schedule in the next few months; you will not want to miss any of Bakersfield's matches.
