Should the Pelicans even be trying to bring Zion Williamson back? - Pelican Debrief

The New Orleans Pelicans have played the entire season with the possibility of Zion Williamson‘s return looming over them.

Willie Green has done a great job of keeping his team focused through all of the rumors and speculation, which recently have included the idea that Zion might return this season.

He has ramped up his activities and posted an insane dunk on Instagram almost as a sign to fans (and maybe the team) that he wants to come back this season.

It’s easy to see both sides of the argument, as the Pelicans have to weigh the value of his return against the risk it would inevitably entail.

Should the New Orleans Pelicans bring Zion Williamson back? Of course!

If Zion Williamson has been cleared by the Pelicans’ medical team and feels 100 percent, then he should be out there.

What looked like a lost season for him and the Pelicans has turned into the 9th seed and a chance at the playoffs. Getting Zion Williamson some reps in a playoff atmosphere would take some of the sting out of his missed season.

He could potentially get two play-in games, and if the Pelicans won them both, a first-round playoff series. We came into this season hoping to get the young guys some playoff experience and it would be a wasted opportunity not to involve Zion if he is ready to go.

The Pelicans are playing well, but with Zion Williamson their ceiling is much higher. His return could not only propel them through the play-in tournament, but might be enough to get a couple of wins in a first-round series.

You never know when these types of opportunities will come up again and the Pels are a contender with Zion in the lineup, so take the shot while you have it.

Should the New Orleans Pelicans bring Zion Williamson back? Of course not!

The New Orleans Pelicans have been playing well without Zion, so there is no reason to rush him back.

The most obvious reason is that it wouldn’t be worth potentially risking next season just to get a couple of games for Zion in this one. He is the future of the team and they need him 100 percent going into next season.

With Zion, Brandon Ingram CJ McCollum, Jonas Valanciunas and Herb Jones, the Pelicans have a potential title contending team next season and there is no reason to risk that future for a small chance at the present.

Even with Zion, the Pels are unlikely to beat the NBA-leading Suns, and that’s if the Pelicans even won their play-in games. It will take some time to work him back into the rotation and get him acclimated with his new teammates, which seems a tough time to beat the best team in the league.

That’s not a good enough reason to risk Zion’s foot, especially when he’s already had several setbacks.

It’s easy to see an argument for either side, though I am sure Zion is itching to get back out there. The Pelicans have shown patience so far and I think they’ll continue, but if he is cleared to play and is ready to go….

What do you think, New Orleans? Is rushing Zion back worth the risk?
