"Two good team wins, and it took all 20 to do it," said Head Coach Megan Brown. "We have to keep getting on a roll, and keep playing well through the remainder of the season."
In game one, it was the ace, Sydney Backstrom, who served up her first no-hitter of the season to the Bulldogs, pitched a complete game with 13 strikeouts Saturday afternoon.
"Backy is capable of throwing this way on many occasions. If you look back through our last few games, she's been carrying those no-hitters into the fouth and fifth inning a lot lately," said Coach Brown. "Today, she did a great job staying with it until the end. She's been throwing well, and right now is the perfect time for that."
The monumental moment for the ace, marked her third career no-hitter topped off with a 6-0 beat down.
Game two, it was a first inning two run single from sophomore Kayley Devivi that gave the Lancers the edge, that stuck for the following six innings.
"We're still fighting right now to win a championship," said Coach Brown. "There are teams at the top and we're all in a dead lock trying to find a way to get to the tournament in a good place. I think everyone's in that mindset and trying to fight hard to the end, so every pitch, and every play matters."
Longwood has taken the series over Gardner-Webb, and looks for the sweep over the Bulldogs Sunday at 12 p.m. for game three.
Game One: Backstrom Serves Up First No-Hitter Of The Season To Open The Conference Series
Longwood (26-22, 17-6 Big South) showcased their talent at the plate in the opening game of the series with Gardner-Webb.
The Lancer's collectively put up 10 hits, where as for the Runnin' Bulldogs it was a donut in the hit column served hot by Longwood's ace.
Backstrom (18-11) threw her first no-hitter of the season, adding her 18th win.
The super senior has pitched three no-hitters in her career at Longwood, one of which being a perfect game last season.
Backstrom dished 13 strikeouts matching her single-game high for the fourth time this season, eighth time serving more than ten in one game.
The fifth year ace is now just two wins away from cracking the top ten for wins in a single-season.
Offensively for the Lancers, the team cashed in one run across the second, third, and fourth innings.
It wasn't until the home fifth where Longwood cracked the Bulldogs defense, scoring three more runs bringing the score to 6-0.
The hits coming off the Lancers bats all broke through the left side in the fifth gaining a deeper lead that would later stand to be enough for the shutout victory.
Game Two: Devivi Two Run Single In The First Is Enough To Capture Back-To-Back Win Saturday Afternoon
Top of the order came out hot in game two, resulting in just enough for a 2-0 victory over the Bulldogs to finish the day Saturday.
Back-to-back singles by the left and center fielder were soon rewarded with a two run single from sophomore Kayley Devivi.
All the offensive action finished up after the first after fellow outfielders Jaden Pone and Lauren Fox scored on a bullet through the right center gap from Devivi.
A pitcher's defensive duel took over the game with Er'ron Burton at the lead in Longwood's circle.
The freshman almost matched her single-game best, just one shy, with a total of 10 strikeouts to close out the second win on the day for the home team.
The shutout wins for the Lancers marked the teams sixth and seventh of the season getting out with two more huge conference wins for the Lancers.
Game three will be played Sunday, May 1, at 12 p.m., pushed up an hour due to potential inclement weather coming in Sunday evening.
