Tornado-damaged Preston and Royal gets its bakery back - The Dallas Morning News

Businesses that have been closed since October are starting to return to the tornado-damaged southeast corner of Preston and Royal in Dallas.

The first of a couple dozen shops and restaurants damaged by the October tornados in the Preston Oaks Shopping Center has reopened.

Nothing Bundt Cakes wanted be back in business in time for Valentine’s Day, one of its busiest times of the year, said Ashley Rios, manager of the bakery, which opened on Jan. 30. While sales aren’t at previous levels, customers are slowly discovering that it’s back, Rios said.

The landlord, Regency Centers, has returned the outer building along Preston Road back to the tenants with a new roof and utilities restored.

That building also housed local restaurant Neighborhood Services, women’s apparel retailer White House Black Market and LegacyTexas Bank.

The bank plans to reopen but doesn’t have a date yet, said Jennifer Dexter, spokeswoman for LegacyTexas Bank. That corner of the building had extensive interior water damage. Neighborhood Services and White House Black Market didn’t respond to requests for updates.

McDonald’s owner Roland Parrish is trying to get his restaurant open by late March.

“The city committed to expediting our permits,” he said, and work is being done on the exterior now. McDonald’s was in a free-standing building that had significant damage but can be fixed.

Central Market, the center’s anchor store, said just before Thanksgiving that it was planning to reopen and hoped to be a catalyst for the stores and restaurants in the center. It’s a major construction project and will take months, the company said in November.

The L-shape center’s longest side was the most severely damaged.

In December, Regency Centers said that a large section along the south side of the shopping center had to be torn down. Those buildings housed Gap, Sample House, Interabang Books, Athleta Talbots, Hollywood Feed, Fish City Grill and several other businesses. Interabang Books was released from its Preston Oaks lease in December and has reopened at 5600 W. Lovers Lane just west of the Dallas North Tollway.

“Right now, we’re just working as hard as we can to get the spaces back up and running while coordinating with our merchants,” said Eric Davidson, spokesman for Regency Centers.

The tenants have full access to the site now, Davidson said.

All these months, many of the businesses, including Central Market and McDonald’s, retained their employees by moving them to other locations.

At Nothing Bundt Cake, most of the staff of almost 30 people are back after working temporarily at the bakery’s Preston Towne Crossing store in Plano.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness of our customers. They’ve been telling us how much they’ve missed us,” said Rios, who had only been on the job a couple of months when the tornado hit. “One customer was so excited we were open because her mom was in the hospital and all she wanted was one of our cakes.”
