Small Business Saturday, 10 years later - Akron News-reporter

Following suit of big box store’s Black Friday, American Express shined light on locally owned businesses and a new holiday clear back in 2010.

Small Business Saturday emerged 10 years ago the Saturday after Thanksgiving.  The holiday falls right in the middle of Black Friday and Cyber Monday and was created as a way to urge people to patronize small, brick and mortar businesses with their holiday shopping.

American Express aggressively first marketed the event on social media, radio and National broadcasting.  With its newfound success, the holiday was adopted in the United Kingdom in 2013, holding their own Small Business Saturday each year on the first Saturday in December.

While most businesses in northeast Colorado have been hit hard in 2020, this holiday season it is especially important to keep your dollars close to home.  Even with several counties in the area being forced into the ‘red zone’, locally owned businesses are doing their best to safely accommodate shoppers – be it on social media, websites, free delivery and curbside pick-up.

Take note of all of the steals and deals here close to home this Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, and help support those businesses who help support your hometown.
