Going Back to Ypsilanti: Women's Hoops Set to Host UIC in Sunday Matinee - Eastern Michigan University Athletics - EMU Eagles

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Sunday, Nov. 29, will mark 266 days since the last Eastern Michigan University sporting event took place inside the Convocation Center (women's basketball vs. Northern Illinois, March 9, 2020). It is only fitting that the women's basketball team will end the stretch that it started when it welcomes the University of Illinois-Chicago to Ypsilanti for a late-week matinee this weekend. Tipoff from the Convo is set for 1 p.m.
Although fans will not be allowed to attend, there is an opportunity to catch the game on ESPN3, with Ryan Wooley calling the play-by-play and Alex Jewell serving as the analyst. The game will also be aired locally on WEMU 89.1 FM. The game will be the first home call for the newly-named voice of the Eagles, Tom Helmer.

SEASON-OPENER SUCCESS: EMU recorded yet another season-opening win when it dismantled Southern Illinois, 65-52, inside the Banterra Center on Nov. 25. In 45 attempts, the Green and White have compiled a 31-14 record in season-openers. In fact, the Eagles have won nine of their last 10 lid-lifters, including eight in-a-row between 2008-09 and 2018-19.

A WIN WOULD: Give EMU its first 2-0 start since the 2018-19 season, and third overall under Fred Castro. Eastern's 2-0 start two seasons ago featured home wins over Cleveland State, 69-63, and Illinois State, 50-41.

HOME OPENERS: Eastern has been unstoppable in home openers since the turn of the decade, going a perfect 20-0 since the 2000-01 season in home-opening bouts. Last season, EMU scored a season-high 95 points en route to a cruise control victory over Olivet College, Nov. 8. Then-junior guard Courtnie Lewis led the way with 15 points, while 2020-21 seniors Autumn Hudson and Corrione Cardwell each chipped in 10 points of their own.

IT'S A COMBS, COMBS WORLD:  If her 19.4 points per game average and 24 consecutive double-digit scoring performances were not enough for you in 2019-20, then redshirt senior guard Areanna Combs provided the beginning of a promising 2020-21 encore against Southern Illinois, Nov. 25. The Oklahoma City native led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-22 shooting, while adding seven rebounds, a career-high five steals, and two blocks, which tied a career-high.
Her effort marked the 13th time in just 25 career games that she has scored more than 20 points. She has scored 10+ in every game of her EMU career (25 games). Additionally, her team-leading two triples both tied a career-high and marked the third time in her career she has been the Eagles' single-game leader from deep.

STEAL THE DEAL: Last season, the Eagles were fantastic at stealing the rock, finishing fourth in the Mid-American Conference with 8.57 steals per game. Redshirt senior Areanna Combs was first on the team and fourth in the MAC with a 2.2 SPG average in 2019-20.
Both the Eagles and Combs appear to be in sync on the defensive end of the floor once again in 2020-21. EMU racked up an incredible 11 steals en route to turning Southern Illinois over 18 times on Nov. 25. Conversely, the EMU offense coughed it up just 11 times and allowed SIU to record just two steals. Individually, it was Combs who led the way with a career-best five steals.

DOMINANT DEFENSE: EMU's defense came to play in its season-opening game against Southern Illinois, Nov. 25. The Eagles held SIU to just 52 points, the lowest scoring offense of any team to play against a MAC opponent this season.
Through one game, EMU leads its Mid-American Conference counterparts in scoring defense (52.0 ppg), steals (11.0), turnover margin (7.0), rebounds (47 rpg), and rebound margin (3.0), while holding the No. 2 spot in three point field goal defense (25.0%). Each of those numbers ranks inside the top-75 nationally, with the scoring defense ranked at No. 30 in the country.

NITA BIT MORE OF THAT: Redshirt junior guard Juanita Agosto had an impressive opening performance against SIU, Nov. 25. Although she didn't stuff the stat sheet with points, the 5-foot-6 Seattle native did record her first-career five-assist contest. That number led all players from both teams in the game. Her assist-to-turnover ratio (5.0) ranks first among MAC players and ninth nationally.

JOLT OF JENNA:  Junior floor general Jenna Anecchiarico was outstanding in her 2020-21 debut against Southern Illinois, Nov. 25. The third-year Eagle recorded her 23rd-career double-digit scoring effort (16 points), and added four boards, two assists, and one steal. Annecchiarico is the two-time defending MAC assist-to-turnover ratio leader.

PINEDA POUNCING ON THE BOARDS: Junior Natalia Pineda wasted no time making her presence felt against the Salukis, Nov. 25. Known for her outside shooting abilities, it was in the paint where she made the biggest impact in EMU's season-opening road win. The Miami native pulled in a career-best nine rebounds to tie for the team lead in that category. Pineda has led the team in single-game rebounding three times in her EMU career.

ARE YOU READY FOR RAY?: If opponents don't know about redshirt junior RayJon Harris yet, they soon will. Helping to anchor the forward position for the Green and White, Harris contributed a career-high 22 minutes against SIU, Nov. 25. Just as impressive as her six points on 3-of-6 shooting was her six rebounds, which is a career-high. Her scoring effort was the 10th performance with five-or-more points in her career.

SCARY GOOD SKANES: Redshirt sophomore forward and one-time Conference USA All-Freshman Team honoree Ce'Nara Skanes was better than advertised in her EMU debut at Southern Illinois, Nov. 25. She recorded a near double-double in the game as she scored 11 points and hauled in nine rebounds (tied for team lead) in the effort. She was one of just six total players in the contest from either team to record 10+ points, and was the only player in the game to score in double figures and finish with better than eight boards.

YOU BETTER CONTROL IT:  EMU took advantage of SIU miscues exceptionally well on Nov. 25. The Eagles scored an incredible 23 points off turnovers and 16 fast break points. Last season, EMU averaged 16.7 points per game off turnovers. EMU's current turnover margin (7.0) ranks first in the Mid-American Conference and 32nd nationally. Meanwhile, EMU is one of the best in the nation through one game at maintaining its possessions. Eastern's 11 turnovers per game is second-lowest in the conference and 17th-lowest in the nation.

SECOND CHANCE CHAMPIONS: One critical aspect of EMU's dominant season-opening performance against SIU, Nov. 25, was its ability to make the Salukis pay with second chance scoring. The Green and White recorded 12 points via reset opportunities, as opposed to just four by the Salukis.
Redshirt junior RayJon Harris was key to sparking that effort. Her five offensive boards led all players and helped EMU establish its scoring chances. Harris' offensive rebounding numbers are tops for any player in the MAC and currently rank 27th nationally.

FACING THE FLAMES: Eastern Michigan and Illinois-Chicago have met 14 times ahead of Sunday's tilt. EMU leads the all-time series, 10-4, but UIC has split with the Eagles over the last four matchups between the squads.
Last season, it was the Eagles that came out on top, earning a 68-59 victory over the Flames, Dec. 18, in the Windy City.

LAST YEAR'S MATCHUP: Eastern pulled away late to earn the victory, 68-59, and claim consecutive wins for the first time in 2019-20 when it beat UIC on Dec. 18, 2019.
Eastern was led by former Eagle Aaliyah Stanley, who tied a career-high with 24 points on 9-of-17 shooting. Then-junior Autumn Hudson offered a season-best performance in the post, scoring 12 points and bringing down five rebounds.

AGAINST THE HORIZON:  EMU owns a 62-45 record against current Horizon League foes. Home to UIC and nine other institutions, the Eagles have battled all but one of the members of the Indianapolis, Ind.-based conference (IUPUI).
Given the proximity, it comes as no surprise that EMU has squared off against Detroit Mercy more than any other Horizon League opponent, with 29 meetings taking place between the two all-time. While Eastern trails in the all-time series, 15-14, against Detroit Mercy, EMU holds the upper hand versus Cleveland State (12-5), Illinois-Chicago (10-4), Valparaiso (5-3), Wright State (7-0), and Youngstown State (4-2). The Green and White sit level with Oakland (7-7) and Milwaukee (2-2) all-time, and are winless in the all-time series against Green Bay (0-5).

ON THE HORIZON: EMU will enjoy a week off before heading to Missouri for the back end of a home-and-home with Southeast Missiouri State, Sunday, Dec. 6. A tipoff time for the game between the Eagles and Redhawks will be announced in the coming days.
