Will Browns’ Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward be back for the Titans and Ravens games? Hey, Mary Kay! - cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio — In today’s Hey, Mary Kay! I answer questions about Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward, Baker Mayfield and more.

Hey, Mary Kay: The Browns have two very big games coming up after this Sunday in Tennessee and at home against the Ravens. Do you think they will have Myles Garrett and Denzel Ward back in time for those games? Thank you Mary Kay! #beatthejags — Jeff Lerner, Avon, Ohio

Hey, Jeff: I think Garrett has an excellent chance of being back next week for the Titans game providing he passes all the COVID-19 protocols this week. He must pass a cardiac screening and then undergo three days of conditioning under the supervision of Browns medical personnel before he can participate in a full practice or game. But he’s been feeling much better and is on track to return in Tennessee. That’s good not only for the Browns’ playoff hopes, but for Garrett’s NFL Defensive Player of the Year candidacy. Heading into Sunday’s games, Garrett is still tied for the NFL lead with 9.5 sacks with the Saints’ Trey Hendrickson. The Rams’ Aaron Donald and Steelers’ T.J. Watt are tied for third with 9.0. The Rams play the 49ers on Sunday, and the Steelers host the Ravens on Tuesday night.

As for Ward, he was initially expected to be out several weeks with his calf strain— possibly as many as three or four like Wyatt Teller was — but much will depend on how he heals in the first 10 days of the injury. The Browns will have a much better idea this week what the outlook is, but it seems like he’ll at least miss the Titans game. Perhaps there’s a chance he could be back for the Ravens on Monday Night Football, and he’ll certainly do everything he can to get back as soon as possible.

Hey, Mary Kay: How is the evaluation of Baker Mayfield going so far this season? — Sam L., Chicago.

Hey, Sam: It’s been very difficult to get a read on Mayfield during three straight bad-weather games at FirstEnergy Stadium, and it’s not going to get much better the rest of the season. In Jacksonville, Mayfield will face the first of three bottom-five pass defenses in his final six games. The Jaguars are 29th, the Titans are 27th and the Jets are 30th.

I think Mayfield will look a lot better than he has in the high winds, hail and rain at FirstEnergy the last three weeks, but facing the 29th pass defense isn’t predictive of future success. There are only two more chances for Mayfield to really get tested during the regular season, and that’s Dec. 14 at home against the Ravens (seventh-ranked pass defense) and in the season finale at home against the Steelers (third-ranked pass defense). But if the Steelers have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs wrapped up by then, they might rest some of their starters, and the Browns won’t get a good feel for how far Mayfield has come. They should, of course, get plenty of data on him in the playoffs.

Hey, Mary Kay: Since the Browns play the Jaguars this week, I thought it would be appropriate to ask: How is Joe Schobert playing this year, as compared to his time with the Browns? And do you think Schobert would be an upgrade to this current Browns’ defense? — Johnny Love, Avon, Ohio

Hey, Johnny: Schobert is having another solid season, ranking second in the AFC with 84 tackles, and becoming only one of two NFL linebackers in the NFL with 80-plus tackles and an interception. His production is consistent with his four years in Cleveland, when he led the Browns with 394 tackles, seven forced fumbles and six interceptions. As for whether or not Schobert would’ve been an upgrade, they actually have three linebackers who are outperforming Schobert, according to profootballfocus.com. Among linebackers who have played at least 20% of the snaps, Sione Takitaki is ranked 19th, B.J. Goodson is 20th and Malcolm Smith is 24th. Schobert is not in the top 50, but among players with at least 50% of the snaps, he’s tied for 44th. The Browns didn’t want to pay Schobert the $10.75 million he’s averaging with the Jaguars, but they will make upgrades to their defense in the offseason.
