RALEIGH, N.C. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team clinched its 14th NCAA regional championship as it scored a 197.800 to place first at the Raleigh Regional Saturday night (April 2) inside the Valvano Center at Reynolds Coliseum.
The meet came down to the last rotation as U-M and UCLA were tied with 148.275s and Missouri sat in third with a 147.850. The Wolverines used a meet-best 49.525 on the uneven bars to clinch the regional championship, while Missouri took second with a 197.425 to earn the second spot at the NCAA Championships. UCLA placed third with a 147.400, and Iowa rounded out the meet with a 197.075.
Michigan led all teams on the vault, scoring a meet-high 49.600 with three scores of 9.900 or higher, including junior Gabby Wilson's first career perfect 10.0 on vault, while junior Sierra Brooks recorded a 9.975. U-M also led the field on the uneven bars with a 49.525 behind four scores of 9.900 or higher, including a team-high 9.950 from senior Abby Heiskell.
The Wolverines started on the balance beam and scored five 9.850s to record a 49.250 in the first rotation. They sat in second behind UCLA, which scored a 49.550 on the floor exercise in its first rotation. Moving to the floor, senior Natalie Wojcik scored a team-high 9.950 in the third slot and both Naomi Morrison and Wilson notched 9.900s to pace Michigan to a 49.425. U-M continued to sit in second overall with a running score of 98.675 as the Bruins led the field with a 98.875.
The vault squad lit the fire the Maize and Blue needed, as Morrison scored a 9.900 and Brooks followed it up with a 9.975, earning 10s from two of the four judges. Wilson was perfect on the vault with her first 10.0 on the event as she became the fifth Wolverine in the Michigan lineup this season to earn the perfect score. Michigan's running score of 148.275 tied with UCLA heading into the final rotation, while Missouri sat in third with a 147.850 and Iowa was in fourth with a 147.725.
Heiskell led off the uneven bars with what would be a team-best 9.950, and Abby Brenner earned a 9.900 in the second spot for the Wolverines. Brooks notched her second score of 9.900 or higher with a 9.900 on the bars, and Wojcik earned a 9.925 to give Michigan a final score of 197.800.
The Wolverines had to wait to find out if they would advance, as UCLA was still finishing on beam and Missouri was closing out its floor rotation.
Michigan will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the NCAA semifinals on Thursday, April 14, at 5 p.m. CDT. The top two teams from each semifinal will advance to the NCAA final on Saturday, April 16.
