CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Blocked messages, incorrect contact information and snags in technology have led to Clarksville-Montgomery County School System extending the deadline for parents to decide whether their children will be going to traditional in-person school or starting the K-12 virtual program next month.
A message was shared with parents Monday evening explaining what the next steps are in the back-to-school process.
The message said, in part:
“As of Monday, July 20, morning, the district has received electronic forms for 80% of our 36,000 students, with 40% opting for CMCSS K-12 Virtual and 60% choosing the traditional model. Of those selecting the traditional model, around 55% have selected CMCSS transportation.
“At 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, families will no longer be able to access the electronic form. Parents/guardians who have not received a form, still need to make their selections, need to update their contact information, or require any other changes/corrections should contact their child’s enrolled school beginning Friday, July 24. The front offices at schools will be open M-F from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. …
“For families who selected CMCSS K-12 Virtual for their child(ren), counselors and administrators will begin the process of case reviews next week. Counselors and administrators will only reach out to parents/guardians of students for which there are concerns or necessary course changes. … All parents/guardians of students who have selected CMCSS K-12 Virtual will receive additional communications in the coming weeks with more information about Learning Mentor trainings, laptops, etc.”
A few more days
According to CMCSS, the form went out via text message or email, and some went out with incorrect information and some parents hadn’t received the form that was distributed on Wednesday, July 15. Other issues surfaced, with some parents not receiving the form because they’d blocked SchoolMessenger on their cell phone or email server.
The deadline has passed, and CMCSS continues to work to get the form to all parents of enrolled students, verify guardianship and answer questions extending it a few more days.
“We have had teams from the Technology, Communications, and Instruction and Curriculum departments working through the weekend on requests and are continuing that work,” said CMCSS spokesman Anthony Johnson. “Due to high email volumes and the need to verify custodial parent/guardian information for each request, we are experiencing longer response times. We will continue working with families over the coming days and weeks, and we will be communicating a school-based process for future corrections and changes.”
