A hot breeze today

Bright, warm, humid weather continues to impact our area today as this tropical air mass lingers in the Upper Mississippi Valley ahead of a storm system and its associated cold front that will eventually bring sweeping changes for the end of the week. Expect more of the same heat and steamy humidity that we've been experiencing for a few days now as we move through our Wednesday, but this time with a gusty southwest breeze to stir the air. Expect gusts around 30 miles per hour in the midday and afternoon with high temperatures in the lower 90s later today and heat indices will be in the mid to upper 90s.

Late week storms

A cold front will move into the region from the northwest late in the day Thursday, likely triggering some scattered thunderstorms for the afternoon and evening hours. A fair amount of instability in the air from recent days of rich humidity may help a few of those storms become strong to severe with large hail and damaging wind gusts possible. High temperatures tomorrow will be in the mid and upper 80s with a slight southeast breeze.

A Friday cold front

Heavy rainfall will be possible in the area in the predawn hours Friday with some localized flood concerns in the heaviest thunderstorms. We'll have breaks of sunshine during the day before another round of afternoon thunderstorms potentially reaches severe levels, especially south of Interstate 90 as a cold front pushes through the area. Again, large hail and damaging winds will be possible as a portion of the area will be in the Slight Risk range for severe weather from the Storm Prediction Center's outlook. High temperatures Friday will be in the lower 80s with a gusty northwest breeze. Storm chances will be on the wane by the evening commute with humidity levels then beginning to drop off for the evening hours.

A mild weekend

Cooler, drier air will settle in for the weekend as Canadian high pressure moves into the Midwest from Canada. We'll enjoy crisp, autumnal weather with abundant sunshine and high temperatures for both Saturday and Sunday will be in the mid-70s.

Cool weather continues next week

A few scattered thunderstorms will be possible on Monday as a front pushes through the area with isolated storms possible hanging around for next Tuesday. There will be small chances for additional thunderstorms later in the week while high temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s throughout the upcoming workweek, a few degrees below the seasonal average for early September.
