Most of the time, a cold front moving into a warm and unstable environment means you could expect thunderstorms to form. However this evening and tonight, we will have a few complicating factors that could help lessen our rain chances a little.
But first, here's a look at the overall setup.
It was another hot and humid day today with highs near 90 and lots of humidity. This has produced an environment with high amounts of instability.
There is a cold front to our north that will move through late this evening into tonight. Thunderstorms will initially form in Iowa this evening before moving south towards us.
I do think there's a good chance that we'll see a broken line of storms pass through. That means that some may see a weak storm or a shower, and some may not even see rain at all, but at the same time within the line, some storms could become strong or severe.
Here's what radar could look like later this evening. Notice how the storms are hit-or-miss compared to being in a solid, congealed line.
Should any storms become strong or severe, high winds will be the primary threat. Wind gusts as high as 60 mph could be possible.
Any individual cells could also produce large hail up to a quarter in size. Wind shear will be increasing as the front approaches. This could allow for some rotating updrafts to develop. However, while the risk is non-zero, our tornado risk this evening is low.
I mentioned earlier that we have some things going against us this evening for thunderstorm formation. Here's a list of three things and how they could affect our rain chances.
The key takeaways from this evening's forecast are:
- The atmosphere looks good to go for thunderstorms early this evening, but initially we'll be too far ahead of the front. Limiting factors could weaken storms heading into tonight.
- Thunderstorms will be possible, but they'll be hit-or-miss and some may not see any rain.
- Despite our limiting factors, strong or severe storms may still be possible. However, widespread severe weather looks unlikely.
