Why Warrors are bringing Stephen Curry back during lottery-bound season - San Francisco Chronicle

Over the past four months, as the Warriors played themselves out of any chance to make the postseason, some NBA fans began to ask this question: “Why bring back Stephen Curry?”

After practice Wednesday afternoon, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr tried to hush that chatter, offering a detailed explanation for why he plans to play Curry when the two-time MVP recovers fully next month from a broken bone in his left hand.

“He’s perfectly healthy,” Kerr said. “He’s in the prime of his career. If the point (of not playing him) is because he might get hurt, then what’s the point of ever playing anything?

“I guess the argument would be, ‘Well, we’re not going to the playoffs.’ Are we not trying to entertain our fans? We’re selling tickets to all these people who love basketball, and Steph Curry is one of the most amazing, graceful, exciting basketball players on earth.

“If he were healthy and we didn’t present him to our fans and say, ‘Here you go, here’s your gift for staying with us for this whole season,’ what would that say about us?”

Judging by the tone of his voice, Kerr is getting tired of all the second-guessing about Curry’s recovery plan. The Warriors’ philosophy has long been to bring back players when they’re cleared by the training staff, and Curry is no exception.

In the past couple of practices, he has participated in every portion other than the scrimmage. Kerr lauded Curry’s conditioning Tuesday, saying, “He’s putting himself through some brutal workouts, so his conditioning is about as good as it could possibly be for somebody who hasn’t scrimmaged, just because of what he does and how he goes about his work.”

Asked about the backlash against bringing back Curry, forward Draymond Green pointed to Anthony Davis’ decision to shut down his season early last season despite being healthy as proof that players will be criticized regardless of what decision they make.

“Everybody was like, ‘He’s wrong. What is he doing?’” Green said, referencing Davis. “Then you get a guy coming back, and (they’re like), ‘Why is he coming back? They’re not making the playoffs.’ It’ll never be the right thing. It will never be enough.”
