China’s national legislature will weigh plans to postpone its key annual conclave scheduled for early March, as the government races to contain the fast-spreading coronavirus epidemic.
The standing committee of China’s National People’s Congress will convene next week to consider the postponement, along with proposed legislation to tighten restrictions on the trade and consumption of wildlife, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said in a report published Monday.
In an interview with Xinhua, a congress official said top legislators believe postponing the meeting is necessary for ensuring proper focus is kept on fighting the epidemic and safeguarding public health and safety.
Officials have said the outbreak of Covid-19, the disease that is caused by the new coronavirus, appears to have stemmed from a food market in the central Chinese city of Wuhan that offered carcasses and live specimens of dozens of wild animals like bamboo rats, ostriches, baby crocodiles and hedgehogs.
The National People’s Congress, comprising nearly 3,000 members, typically gathers in early March to hold its annual conclave, where the Chinese government sets out its policy agenda for the coming year. A less-powerful political-advisory body also meets at the same time, in a pair of gatherings known locally as the “Two Sessions.”
The legislature’s statement comes amid widespread uncertainty around China when school classes and businesses can be expected to resume normal operation.
