Ohio Men's Basketball Back in the Convo Tuesday Night Against BGSU - Ohio University - Ohio University Athletics

ATHENS, Ohio -- The Ohio men's basketball team (12-2, 23-0 MAC) returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 11 when they host Bowling Green (8-6, 1-2) inside the Convocation Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. The Bobcats matchup will be seen on ESPN3 where Russ Eisenstein and Rob Cornelius will have the call. 

The Bobcats' matchup can also be heard on the Ohio Sports Network from Learfield where Marty Bannister will have the call. WXTQ (Power 105) in Athens returns as the 11-station network's flagship.  

STORYLINES
• Ohio is coming off of a thrilling 80-72 victory over Kent State on Jan. 7 inside the Convo. 
• Third-year head coach Jeff Boals recorded his 100th career win on Jan 4 at Akron. 
• This is the 151st all-time meeting between Ohio and BGSU.
•  Bowling Green leads the all-time series, 81-69.
• The Bobcats and Bowling Green last met on Dec. 30, 2019 with the Falcons defeating Ohio, 83-75 in Athens.  
• The Bobcats are 9-12 against BGSU since the 2010-11 season.
• Ohio and BGSU were suppose to met on March 5, 2021, however, that meeting was canceled due to Covid-19.  
• Ohio last defeated Bowling Green at home on Feb. 22, 2019, with the Bobcats winning 92-87. 
• The Bobcats 12-2 record through 14 games is the best start for the Bobcats since the 2011-12 season when Ohio started 13-1 over the same span of games.  
Mark Sears has been named the MAC Player of the Week four times this season, with the most recent coming on Jan. 10. 
• The Bobcats are currently first in the MAC in turnover margin at +4.07.

SCOUTING BOWLING GREEN
Bowling Green enters the matchup with the Bobcats with an 8-6 record and a 1-2 mark in MAC play, after defeating Miami, 87-83  in overtime on Jan. 8. 

As a team, Bowling Green averages 84.2 points a game, while shooting 43.4 percent from the field, 35.0 percent from three and 76.3 percent from the line. The Falcons average 33.1 rebounds, 13.0 assists and 8.2 steals a game. Bowling Green also averages 3.9 blocks a game and turn the ball over an average of 12.8 times a game. 

Opponents average 75.6 points and are shooting 41.2 percent from the field, 32.2 percent from three and 72.9 percent from the line. BGSU's opponents also average 38.6 rebounds and 13.4 assists per game, while adding 6.4 steals and 3.0 blocks. Opponents also turn the ball over an average of 15.0 times a game. 

Individually, Daeqwon Ploeden averages  16.1 points a game, while shooting .424 from the field, .396 from three and .817 from the line. He also adds 7.3 boards a game. Joe Reece is averaging 12.4 points and 6.4 rebounds a game, while shooting 56.3 percent from the field. 

SCOUTING OHIO
Ohio enters the matchup with Bowling with a 12-2 overall record  and a 3-0 mark in MAC play after defeating Kent State, 80-72 on Jan. 7 in Athens. 

The Bobcats average 72.6 points a game, while shooting .428 from the field, .333 from three and .793 from the line. The Bobcats grab 33.7 rebounds a game, while dishing out an average of 13.0 assists and registering 7.6 steals a game. Ohio is averaging 11.1 turnovers a game. 

Meanwhile, opponents are averaging 65.3 points a game, while shooting .434 from the field, .310 from three and .772 from the line. Opponents are averaging 34.4 rebounds, 11.5 assists and 15.2 turnovers a game. 

Individually, Ohio is led by guard Mark Sears who is averaging 19.7 points a game, while shooting .489 from the field, .439 from three and .911 from the line. Forward Jason Carter is adding 14.0 points and 7.1 rebounds a game, while forward Ben Vander Plas is averaging 12.6 points a game and 6.6 rebounds.

This is the 151st all-time meeting between Ohio and BGSU.

The Bobcats and Bowling Green last met on Dec. 30, 2019 when the Falcons defeated Ohio, 83-75 inside the Convocation Center. 

Forward Dwight Wilson III put up 20 points. Ben Vander Plas had a double-double, scoring 13 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and adding five assists. Ben Roderick put up 16 points for the Bobcats, going 4-of-10 from beyond the arc. Lunden McDay scored 11 points, going 4-of-10 from the field and 3-of-6 from three. Mark Sears earned his first collegiate start, putting up nine points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out nine assists.

Ohio finished the game shooting 40.9 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from three-point range and were 9-of-12 from the line, while Bowling Green shot 42.6 percent from the field, 31.8 percent from three and were 36-of-38 from the free throw line. BGSU out-rebounded the Bobcats 38-31, while Ohio dished out 20 assists to the Falcons' 12. 

Five Falcons scored in double-digits. Trey Diggs paved the way with 20 points. Justin Turner scored 15 points, going 3-of-10 from the field and a perfect 9-of-9 from the line. Bowling Green scored 36 of their points from the free throw line.

LAST TIME OUT
Helped by a career night from beyond the arc from redshirt senior forward Ben Vander Plas, the Ohio men's basketball team (12-2, 3-0 MAC) extended its winning streak to seven games when they defeated Kent State (7-7, 2-2 MAC), 80-72, Friday night inside the Convocation Center. 

Leading the Bobcats was sophomore guard Mark Sears who scored 28 points, went 9-of-15 from the field, 9-of-10 from the line, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists. It was Sears' fifth-straight game of 20-plus points. Vander Plas added 20, hitting a career-high six made threes, grabbing six boards, and dishing out a team-high five assists. Junior forward Ben Roderick added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists, while fifth-year forward Jason Carter added 10 points, eight rebounds and two steals. 

Overall, Ohio shot 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from three and were 20-of-23 from the line, while Kent State shot 38.5 percent from the field, 23.5 percent from three and were 18-of-23 from the line, Kent State outrebounded the Bobcats, 34-33, while Ohio dished out 11 assists to their nine. 

For Kent State, Sincere Carry scored 26 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Malique Jacobs added 16 points and eight boards. 

PROTECT THIS HOUSE

OHIO IN THE NET

Mark Sears ranks first in the MAC in scoring, free throw percentage, fourth in steals and third in minutes. 

Jason Carter is fourth in blocked shots (17) and sixth in rebounding. 

Ben Vander Plas is second in the league in minutes played (35.0).

Meanwhile, Ohio is first in turnover margin (+4.07), second in free throw percentage, third in assist/TO ratio (1.1) and second in steals (7.6). 

SEARS AT THE LINE
Mark Sears continues his solid season at the free throw line. The sophomore is shooting 91.1 percent (72-of-79), which ranks him first in the MAC and 14th in the NCAA in free throw percentage. He also ranks 13th in free throws made. 

Meanwhile, in the last five games, Sears is 42-of-34 from the line, including going 10-of-10 against USC Upstate and Marshall. 

MILES STEPPING UP
Junior guard Miles Brown is stepping up in his new starting role. 

In 13 games, Brown is averaging 7.2 points and is shooting .432 from the field, .333 from three and is .824 from the line. 

Brown scored a career-high 19 points on Nov. 26 against Concordia.

IT'S LIKE HE NEVER LEFT
In his first game back in Athens, Jason Carter was back to his old self. 

Carter registered his first double double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in the victory over Belmont. 

After 14 games, Carter is averaging 14.0 points and 7.1 rebounds a game. He is also shooting .436 from the field, .238 from three and is 28-of-41 from the line. 

He also has two double-doubles early on this season. 

SEARS LEADING THE WAY
Since taking over point guard duties at the start of the season, Sears has quickly proven that he belongs. 

Over 14 game, Sears is leading Ohio with 19.7 points per game. He is shooting .489 from the field, .439 from three and .911 from the line. 

He also averages 4.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.7 steals a game. 

After opening the season with a 27-point performance against Belmont, Sears also added a 24-point game against St. Francis on Dec. 4, where he grabbed a career-high eight rebounds. 

Sears had another 20-point performance on Dec. 15 against Marshall, scoring 24 points in the 75-65 victory. 

Sears set another career-high on Dec. 21 when he scored 33 points against USC Upstate inside the Convo. 

He has been named the MAC Player of the Week four times this season. 

CAREER DAY FOR MARK
On Dec. 21 against USC Upstate, Mark Sears set a career-high with 33 points in the 85-70 victory. He went 11-of-16 from the field, a perfect 10-of-10 from the line and grabbed a career-tying eight boards.

BOALS MARCH TO 100
Third-year head coach Jeff Boals recorded his 100th career win on Jan 4 at Akron.

BVP STILL STEADY
Ben Vander Plas picked up right where he left on in 2021-22 on Nov. 9. 

The forward scored 19 points and grabbed six boards in Ohio's win against Belmont. He also tied a career-high, dishing out seven assists. 

BVP added another 19-point performance against Kentucky. 

BVP is currently third on the team in scoring with 12.6 points per game. He also averages 6.6 rebounds, while dishing out 3.0 assists a game. Vander Plas is shooting .438 from the field and .363 from three. 

BVP also made a splash on Dec. 1 at LSU. With the Bobcats trailing entering the second, Vander Plas hit three-straight threes for Ohio, helping tie the game early in the second half. He finished the game with 12 points. 

BVP hit a career-high six made three pointers on Jan. 7 against Kent State, while also scoring season-high 20 points in the victory. 

CLAYTON FOR THREE
In 14 games in the green and white, freshman AJ Clayton has made at least one three in nine of those games. 

Clayton recorded his first two-point basket on Nov. 26 against Concordia. 

Clayton has scored six points in three games this season - two against SEC opponents and one at Stetson on Dec. 11.

Clayton set a career-high with seven points on Dec. 21 vs. USC Upstate.  

The 17-year old is averaging 3.6 points a game and 10.5 minutes. 

SCHMOCK SHOWS OUT
Senior transfer guard Tommy Schmock has a career day on Nov. 26 against Concordia, scoring 11 points and going from 3-of-7 from three. 

Against LSU, Schmock snagged a career-high three steals.  

Schmock got his first start in the Green and White on Jan. 7 against Kent State. 

This season. Schmock is averaging 3.9 points in 15.7 minutes off the bench. 

TOWNS OFF THE BENCH
Sophomore forward Sam Towns made a mark on Nov. 13 at Cleveland State. 

Off the bench, Towns scored five points, hit a three, while also grabbed a career-high six rebounds and dished out five assists. 

So far off the bench, Towns is averaging 2.1 points and 9.7 minutes. 

TWO NEW FACES
The Bobcats have added two new faces to the roster for the start of the Spring semester, 

Ohio has added sophomore guard Luke Frazier, a transfer from Dayton. 

The Bobcats have also added senior guard Josh McDaniel. McDaniel is a walk-on and former manager for the Bobcats. 

UP NEXT
Up next, the Bobcats are back on the road this weekend when they head to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on Central Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m.
