ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football team fell into a hole early and did not recover, dropping a 49-11 contest to No. 13-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday night (Nov. 14) at Michigan Stadium.
The Badgers (2-0) got the ball first to start the game, but the Wolverines were up to the task, coming up with a stop on the first drive. The visitors got on the scoreboard first though, going up, 7-0, on a two-yard rush from Nakia Watson with 9:28 remaining in the first quarter.
Michigan (1-3) got a great return from sophomore Giles Jackson, who set the Wolverines up near midfield on the ensuing kickoff. A turnover ended the drive prematurely and Wisconsin capitalized, increasing its lead to 14-0 on a one-yard pass from Graham Mertz to Mason Stokke with 6:08 left in the opening quarter. The Badgers went on to score two more touchdowns from Stokke and Watson to go up, 28-0, at the 10:07 mark of the second quarter.
Toward the end of the first half and facing a third-and-11, junior quarterback Joe Milton found Jackson streaking up the sideline for 36 yards. Three plays later, on third-and-five, Milton hit graduate student Nick Eubanks for 13 yards. Michigan thought it had its first touchdown from fifth-year senior Chris Evans, but a replay review overturned the call on the field. Facing a fourth-and-goal from the half-yard line, Milton was stopped short on a run, turning the ball over on downs. The Badgers led, 28-0, at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room at halftime, Michigan went 47 yards in its first three plays, but stalled from there, settling on a 46-yard field goal from graduate student Quinn Nordin to make the score 28-3 with 12:52 to go in the third quarter.
Wisconsin went up, 35-3, on 13-yard touchdown pass from Graham Mertz to Jake Ferguson with 4:45 remaining in the third.
Following that score, Michigan made a change at quarterback and went to sophomore Cade McNamara, who came out firing. He completed his first three passes: 23 yards to junior Ronnie Bell, 28 yards to Eubanks and a 23-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Mike Sainristil, which brought the score to 35-9. McNamara made the two-point conversion for good measure, completing it to Jackson.
Wisconsin tacked on fourth-quarter rushing touchdowns from Danny Davis and Jalen Berger to cap the scoring at 49-11.
The Wolverines return to the road next Saturday (Nov. 21), when they will face Rutgers in Piscataway, N.J. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
