PEPPER PIKE, Ohio

Speeding (mandatory court appearance), reckless operation: Belgrave, Brainard roads

In response to complaints of speeding along Belgrave Road, which has served as a shortcut between Brainard and Fairmount Boulevard -- especially with recent construction in the area -- police were stationed in the area around 7:15 a.m. Nov. 5, when an officer clocked a Jeep Cherokee going 51 mph in the 25 mph zone.

The driver also disregarded yields and stops as he proceeded up Brainard, with the officer following at up to 60 mph but still lagging behind. The driver eventually turned into the medical building parking lot at Cedar Road, then attempted to continue north on Brainard, in spite of the fact that the cruiser had its siren and lights activated.

Police finally stopped the car, driven by a boy, 17, with a male passenger, 16, both from Pepper Pike, who said they were speeding because they were late for school. They said they were unaware of the siren behind them due to the car stereo playing loudly.

Asked about his speed, the driver said he may have been going 70 mph at one point, adding that he was aware of the speed limit on Belgrave.

The Cherokee was turned over to the driver’s mother. The boy said he usually drives a Jeep Wrangler, about which police had received complaints in the past. Police said he also admitted causing tire damage to a grass island in a cul-de-sac along the way.

Mutual aid, attempted burglary: South Woodland Road

A Cleveland man, 35, riding a bicycle along Ohio 87 was taken into custody in the Sterling Lakes of Pepper Pike development around 4:15 p.m. Nov. 5 after police received reports from officers in Beachwood that he had opened mail packages left on a porch.

Witnesses said that while fleeing, he also rode up a driveway to a home in Pepper Pike and tried to get into a garage, but the door was locked.

An attempted burglary charge was expected because the resident was home with his daughters at the time.

The man was turned over to Beachwood police and was found to have a stolen wallet belonging to a resident there and containing at least one credit card. He now faces multiple charges.

Damage to property: Interstate 271

A Licking County woman, 22, escaped injury around 5 p.m. Nov. 3 after a metal pole fell off a northbound truck traveling in front of her and struck her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt, causing disabling damage and requiring a tow. The truck driver had not been located.

Criminal mischief: Lander Road

A Munroe Falls man, 30, was arrested Oct. 31 following a 6 a.m. report of someone in the woods, followed by the sound of loud pounding noises coming from a home. Police found that a large side window had been broken.

Next door, they were greeted by two women in the driveway with Solo cups who were attending a Halloween party. The host located the suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated and said he had gone outside to escort another guest out to an Uber ride, then walked up to the wrong house.

Thinking he had been locked out of the party and without his cell phone, he started banging on the windows, breaking one by accident and suffering some cuts on his arm.

For identification, he initially gave police his brother’s personal information. He was cited and eventually picked up by another Uber driver. The city Service Department boarded up the neighbor’s window.

Suspicion, curfew violation: Brainard Road

Three juveniles reportedly running up the road at 1 a.m. Nov. 1 were turned over to their parents after police stopped them for questioning. The student athletes said they were upset with the outcome of their football season and had embarked on a conditioning run from a home in Hunting Valley.

Attempt to locate: Chagrin Boulevard, Lander Road

A girl, 15, who walked away from the New Directions residential drug treatment center Nov. 1 was found the next day on the campus of Ursuline College and returned to the facility.
