Back to the Foodture restaurant expanding to Pittsburgh's South Side - TribLIVE

The “Buggie” is two 8-ounce burgers in between two grilled cheese sandwiches with two layers of egg, bacon, tomato, lettuce and sauce.

And an extra slice of bread in between.

The signature item on the Back to the Foodture menu in Pitcairn might expand one’s waistline. Sales of the burger are helping the restaurant to get bigger, too.

A second location is planned to open in the spring on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

Back to the Foodture, inspired by the “Back to the Future” movie, is owned by couple Angel Randolph and Eddie Barnz of Monroeville. They transformed the former Broadway Boulevard bar into a restaurant.

The bar top is filled with photos that span from 1900 to 2020, highlighting family members who were good cooks and inspired the couple to get into the food business. There are also images of Randolph and Barnz when they were younger.

Opening a second spot during a pandemic has been challenging. They are also helping their children with remote learning.

“It also has been a blessing,” Barnz said. “So many businesses have been closing or going bankrupt.”

He said they’ve been concentrating on doing a lot of curbside pickup for customers to keep everyone safe. They are doing well because they specialize in wings, burgers and fries.

Their restaurants are also mini-museums.

Barnz saved many of his childhood toys and customers have contributed some as well. Some things are encased in glass. There is a Mr. Potato Head, Rock’Em Sock’Em robots, Jarts, Slinky, vinyl records and a even a disco ball. A tricycle and scooter sits in the front corner and a few pair of roller skates are behind the counter.

They have original photos from the television show “The Dukes of Hazzard.” A customer’s mom was the show’s photographer.

Barnz said he kept the items because he wanted other kids – and adults — to see them.

They also have T-shirts for $25, mugs for $15 and, of course, face masks for sale for $10.

“When I was 10 years old I decided to keep my Sega and Nintendo and restore them so others could play them,” said Barnz. “I wanted to share those old memories for generations of people from kids to moms and dads to grandparents. We want to take you back in time. I also wanted to be a chef.”

He doesn’t do much cooking. That’s Randolph’s forte. She is the one making the 30 different burgers, the wings (there are 115 flavors), 24 french fry selections and 16 hot dog choices.

Randolph created a hot sauce called “Angel’s Revenge,” as well as the burger seasoning, “Angel Dust.” Their son Ryeon created the “Buggie” burger.

“I can’t tell you what the ingredients are for the hot sauce or seasoning,” she said. “Those are secret recipes.”

Back to the Foodture is located at 378 Broadway Blvd., Pitcairn.

The second location planned for a spring opening will be located at 2767 East Carson St. on the South Side.
