2021 GMC Canyon AT4 Special Edition Coming Later This Year - GM Authority

The GMC Canyon AT4 arrived to replace the Canyon All Terrain as part of a mild update to the Canyon midsize pickup truck for the 2021 model year. With the 2021 GMC Canyon having gone into production in June, the very first units of the off-road-oriented model have now begun to arrive at dealerships. But GMC has more up its sleeve for the Canyon AT4.

Sources familiar with General Motors’ product plans tell GM Authority that the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 will soon add a special edition model. Details, such as what features the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 Special Edition will offer, what it will end up being called, or how much the package will cost, are unclear as of this writing. However, we do know that The General is planning to announce the package in the near-term future. We also have some ideas of what the package could include.

In January, GM Authority reported that the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 will offer an Off-Road Performance Edition Package that would feature a bevy of rugged equipment, including:

• Exterior:
  • 17″ x 8″ gloss-Black aluminum wheels that replace the standard aluminum wheels
  • Spray-on bedliner
  • Black AT4 badges
  • Performance exhaust tip
  • Front Performance skid plate
  • Mid performance skid plate
  • Off-Road rocker protection
• Interior:
  • All-weather floor liners
• Mechanical:
  • Front leveling kit

This Off-Road Performance Edition package never saw the light of day, since it was scrapped before the 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 went into production (though some of its features – such as the two skid plates – are now offered as part of a new Performance Skid Plate package). As a result, we are inclined to believe that the upcoming Canyon AT4 Special Edition could include some of the features from the scrapped Off-road Performance Edition Package.

Compared to the Canyon All Terrain that it replaces, the Canyon AT4 features a bolder exterior design defined by dark chrome finishes, a larger grille and red recovery hooks. The cabin gains unique Kalahari stitching and the AT4 logo embroidered on the headrests. Mechanicals carry over from the Canyon All Terrain, including the standard 3.6L V6 LGZ gasoline engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as the optional 2.8L I4 LWN turbo-diesel Duramax engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The GMC Canyon is assembled at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri for all markets where it’s sold, including the United States, Canada, and the Middle East.
