PGA Championship pushed back to August due to coronavirus - New York Post

The PGA Championship is returning to an August tee-off thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic.

Originally scheduled for May 14-17 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, the tournament, like several others, was officially postponed on March 17 due to growing concerns over the rapid spread of COVID-19.

The tournament has reportedly been rescheduled, returning to its former spot on the calendar in mid-August, when the event was played for several decades before a move to May last year. The San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday that the tournament will remain at Harding Park and be moved to Aug. 6-9.

However, so long as coronavirus cases continue to climb in the United States, it is unclear if the event will be played at Harding Park or at all. The British Open canceled this year’s event, leaving golf with three majors for now.

On Saturday, California governor Gavin Newsom questioned whether the state could host NFL games in stadiums as planned beginning in August.

President Trump, who spoke with sports executives this weekend, said he expects the season to start on time.

“Our decision on that basis here in the state of California will be determined by the facts, will be determined by the health experts, will be determined by our ability to meet this moment and bend this curve, and have the appropriate community surveillance and testing to confidently determine whether that’s appropriate,” Newsom said. “Right now, I’m just focusing on the immediate, but that (NFL games in stadiums) is not something I anticipate happening in the next few months.”

The Masters, which was set to be played this week at Augusta, was also postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak. A rescheduled date has not been released yet, though October has been speculated.

The Post reported last week that the US Open will not be played June 16-19 at Winged Foot, however the plan is to keep the tournament at the Mamaroneck course on a later date.

“[We] remain hopeful about late in the summer, [maybe] early September,’’ a source told The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro.
