VALPARAISO, Ind. - After a 13-game non-conference season, with one early-season MVC game mixed in, the Illinois State Redbirds return to Missouri Valley Conference play when the squad travels to northwest Indiana to take on the Valparaiso Beacons to kick off the 2022 calendar year.
QUICK HITTERS
• Illinois State has made at least half of its shots in each of its last three games, which is tied for the fifth-longest such streak at ISU since 1990-91.
• Illinois State's 6.1 blocked shot per game average puts it 12th in the country in the category, and on pace to shatter the school record (5.2 blocks per game)
• Since making the move to a reserve role, ISU guard Josiah Strong has scored 20 or more points three times. His three games of 20+ points are the fourth-most in the country this season.
• Reeves and Strong are two of just 16 student-athletes in the country to rank inside of the top-40 in both three-point makes per game and three-point percentage.
• With his 21-point, 10-rebound, four-assists, three three-point basket game against UTSA, Antonio Reeves became just the 10th player in the country this season to put up similar numbers, and one of just seven to do it against a NCAA Division I foe.
• Antonio Reeves ranks 12th in NCAA Division I in scoring, averaging 20.9 points per game, and just ahead of Wednesday opponent Johnny Davis of Wisconsin who averages 20.8 for 14th place in the country.
• With his 26 points off the bench against Chicago State, ISU guard Josiah Strong is tied for the 10th most points in a game by a non-starter in program history.
• Reeves has scored 826 career points, which puts him 65th in school history, and just 21 points away from climbing into sole possession of 63rd in school history.
• Reeves has scored in double figures in all 14 games this season, which is the 13th-longest such streak to open a season in program history. He is the only player in the MVC to have scored in double-figures in every game of the season.
• Illinois State has had five different players score at least 20 points in a single game this season, which is tied for the highest such total in the MVC this season.
• Illinois State is one of just seven schools in the country this season to have two different student-athletes score at least 32 points in a single game.
• In his 10th year as head coach, Dan Muller has the third-most wins and third-best win percentage of any NCAA Division I school in Illinois.
SCOUTING THE BEACONS
Valparaiso comes into the game riding a two-game win streak heading into the new year, including an 88-66 win over William & Mary on December 22.
In the win over the Tribe, the Beacons put four players into double-figure scoring, led by Kobe King who scored 19 points, while Sheldon Edwards scored 17, Kevion Taylor 15, and Thomas Kithier 12. Kithier pulled down six rebounds for Valpo, who was out-rebounded 34-to-21 in the contest. Trevor Anderson dished out six assists, as Valpo had a 23-to-8 assit-to-turnover ratio.
For the year the Beacons have six players currently averaging in double-figure scoring, led by King's 16.0 point per game average. Ben Krikke averages 15.0 while Edwards (12.2), Anderson (10.5), Taylor (10.5), and Kithier (10.1) are all above the double-figure plateau.
Kithier is the team leader in rebounds, pulling down 6.5 per contest, while Anderson has given out 35 assists to pace the team. Edwards' 17 blocked shots are the high-water mark in the Beacon squad, while he and Taylor have 14 steals to lead the way for Valpo.
MAKING OVER HALF
Over the last three games - and five of the last seven games - Illinois State has made at least half of their shots in a contest. By shooting 50% or better over each of the last three games, it is just the 12th time since 1990-91 that a Redbird team hit over half of their shots in a game for three straight games. During that span, the longest streak was six games held by the 2012-13 squad.

MULTIPLE 20-POINTS OFF OF THE BENCH
Since making the move to a reserve role, Illinois State guard Josiah Strong has found his rhythm, and his shooting stroke. In six games, he has scored 20 or more points three times, while averaging 15.5 points per game in those six games. His three games of 20+ points are the fourth-most by a reserve in the country this season, trailing only the four games of reaching the scoring plateau from Matt Balanc (Quinnipiac), Tari Eason (Louisiana State), and Trevion Williams (Purdue). Since 2010-11, the most 20+ point scoring games in a reserve role is 12, held by two different student-athletes.
HIGH MAKES AND PERCENTAGE
Illinois State guards Antonio Reeves and Josiah Strong are one of just 16 student-athletes across NCAA Division I to rank inside of the top 40 in both three point field goals made per game and three-point field goal percentage. Reeves and Josiah Strong are one of just two pairs in the country to rank inside of the top-40 in both categories (joined by Travis Evee and Carl Pierre from Rice).
