HERKIMER, NY – The Shenendehowa boy’s soccer team put up a fight on Saturday afternoon against Section 3 foe, Fayetteville-Manlius (18-0-1). It wouldn’t be enough though, as the Plainsmen dropped the regional championship match, 3-2.
“It’s been a pleasure to coach these boys. They’re great kids and I’m sad to see it come to an end,” said Shen coach Jon Bain.
Fayetteville’s star senior Antonio Pagano gave the Hornets the lead in the eighth minute
The Plainsmen answered back in the 21st minute when Mark Makhatadze scored directly on a corner kick, tying the game 1-1.
Mid-way through the first half, Shen lost their senior goalkeeper and captain, Noah Flint. He went down with an injury on a save, forcing senior backup Andrew Moulton to enter the game.
“I think he got undercut a little bit; he wasn’t expecting it. He made the save and someone didn’t allow him to land,” Bain explained. “It was next man up. Andrew does a great job.”
In the 29th minute, Fayetteville once again took the lead on a goal by Riley Warren-Nichols to lead 2-1 at halftime.
Seven minutes into the second half, Shen evened the odds on a great cross up the middle by Makhatadze, which was finished off by Lochlain Clarke.
The Hornets wasted no time regaining the lead. 65 seconds after Shen’s score, Fayetteville earned a corner kick which was taken by Pagano. Warren-Nichols found the back of the net on the ball from Pagano for his second goal of the game, giving the Hornets a 3-2 lead.
“We knew that we could get another one. The third was really the back-breaker for us,” Bain said.
Saturday’s result is Shen’s first loss since falling in the NYS Final Four to Fairport 1-0 in 2019. They finish the 2021 season with an overall record of 14-1-4.
“Their overall resiliency. Not only dealing with a pandemic, but changes within the game,” Bain said of what he’ll remember about this season’s team. “We give up a goal and then we get it back. Then we give up an unfortunate goal and we get it back again. Just their ability to battle and to fight and to keep on keeping on, even though the odds are against them.”
