Eagles Back in the Win Column after 38-20 Victory at No. 4/6 UC Davis - goeags.com

In a back-and-forth affair on a foggy evening between two top-ten Football Championship Subdivision teams, the Eastern Washington University football team traveled to Davis, Calif., to take on UC Davis (Nov. 13). The No. 7/8 Eagles defeated the No. 6/4 Aggies by a final score of 38-20 in a game that saw four lead changes. With the win, Eastern Washington is now 10-0 all-time against the Aggies.

The Eagles improve to 8-2 overall and 5-2 in Big Sky Conference play, while UC Davis falls to 8-2 and 5-2.

Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere became the Big Sky Conference's all-time leader in passing yards with 12,676 in his career, breaking former Eagle Matt Nichols' record of 12,616. He completed 34 of his 54 pass attempts with 411 yards through the air, adding 45 on the ground for 456 yards of total offense plus three passing touchdowns. Additionally, he tied Vernon Adams Jr.'s Big Sky Conference and Eastern Washington career passing touchdowns record with 110.

"Our players responded to two weeks of adversity and this week there was a ton more. Our players are resilient and they played with the most amount of guts I've ever seen coming down here and away from home for the first time in a month against a top-five outfit," said head coach Aaron Best. "From about the second quarter on, we controlled the game and especially did so late in the game when we needed it with the run. Tamarick Pierce was big, we had a ton of players score touchdowns and we had a bunch of yards after catch and contact. That was a fun game to see if you could see it in the fog."

The Eagles put up 625 yards of total offense, holding UC Davis to 283. Eastern had 211 rushing yards and 414 through the air.

The Aggies struck first and led 7-0 after the first quarter. As time was expiring in the first frame, the Eagles completed a fake punt for a fresh set of downs to start the second. Eric Barriere would then find Freddie Roberson on a four-yard strike and cut the lead to 7-6 after the extra point failed. Eastern Washington went up 14-7 after Barriere found Efton Chism III in the endzone on a four-yard pass and the two-point conversion attempt from Barriere to Andrew Boston was successful. The Aggies made a 29-yard field goal on the ensuing drive, and the Eagles led 14-10 at the half.

Another lead change came at the start of the third quarter when the Aggies scored on a 97-yard kickoff return on their first drive of the half. EWU would wind up outscoring the Aggies 10-7 in the frame and forced two turnovers. The Eagles retook the lead in the third quarter on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Barriere to Dylan Ingram, pulling ahead 21-17 after the extra point. Demetrius Crosby Jr. grabbed an interception and it led to a 31-yard field attempt by Jackson Cleaver that was good, taking the seven-point lead into the fourth.

UC Davis made a 45-yard field goal attempt to start the third quarter, but Eastern Washington outscored the Aggies 14-0 after that thanks to a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Isaiah Lewis and a four-yard rushing touchdown by Tamarick Pierce.

Freddie Roberson (6 catches for 93 yards) and Andrew Boston (7 catches for 72 yards) were Eastern's leading receivers. Tamarick Pierce was the leading rusher with 82 yards on 17 carries, plus a touchdown.

Defensively, Jack Sendelbach had nine tackles, a forced fumble, two tackles for loss and a pass break up. Anthany Smith and Mitchell Johnson each added six tackles, Calin Criner had a forced fumble, and Demetrius Crosby Jr. grabbed an interception.

The final regular season game is set for Nov. 20 at Portland State in Hillsboro, Ore. Kickoff is set for 2:05 p.m. on ESPN+ and 700-AM ESPN.

Eastern is 33-20 Since 2010 Versus Ranked Opponents

Including tonight's game against UC Davis and EWU's games on Oct. 2 versus fourth-ranked Montana and Nov. 6 against fourth-ranked Montana State, Eastern has now won 62 percent of its games (33-20) versus ranked teams since 2010. Eastern is 62-74 (.455) in 136 games overall against ranked teams since becoming a member of that classification in 1983 (then known as I-AA). Since 1983, Eastern is 1-7 versus ranked FBS foes, and a loss to Washington (ranked 13th by the media and 12th by the coaches) in 2019 was the eighth such foe EWU has faced.

Eastern is 12-11 versus top 10 foes since 2010, including a 7-5 mark in the regular season and 5-6 in the playoffs. Eastern is 21-46 in the 67 games all-time versus top 10 opponents. The Eagles are 10-36 all-time versus top 5 opponents (5-8 since 2010), including 2-8 versus No. 1 (0-2 since 2010).

MORE COMMENTS FROM HEAD COACH AARON BEST:

On Eric Barriere's Performance: "He's a legend. He's a present-day legend. He's still writing his script, and every day he tries to get better and we found a way to win. A lot of the credit goes to the players up front protecting him while he's staring down field. A lot of our players caught tough balls. Late in the game, we were running the ball well and that makes the opportunity to throw the ball a lot better, so we were mixing it up. I thought we were physical and controlled the line of scrimmage for the better part of the day. Don't forget about the defense, they played lights out. They stood tall in the red zone multiple times. We were aggressive from the start with the fake punt and scored a touchdown early in the game. The kicking woes were back-and-forth. Having Cody Clements out is obviously tough, so Aaron Estrada filled in and it was a total team effort. I couldn't be more proud, and the ride home will be very joyful."

On Winning the Turnover Battle: "Stats aside, it was nice to have Jack Sendelbach back but Cale Lindsay stepped in last week with double-digit tackles. Jack, being the leader and commander he is out there getting players lined up, his energy is second to none. Demetrius Crosby Jr. had a pick in the red zone with a hold on him, so back-to-back to plays inducing a penalty and getting a turnover. It was awesome. Coach Eti Ena had them rocking and rolling and there were a lot of things with a lot of smoke and mirrors. We limited the explosiveness and when they did get in the red zone, we buckled down and made them kick field goals. It was a total team effort, we played with a lot of guts – a lot of guts – and fought through adversity. The opportunity to respond was here and we responded, that's what a mature football team does."
