POWELLS POINT, N.C. – A bounce-back day saw Longwood shave eight strokes off its round-one score and two Lancers finish under par in the second round of the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate Monday at Kilmarlic Golf Club.
Led by a three-under 68 by sophomore Nick Rakes and a one-under 70 by junior Christian Michael, the Lancers jumped into the top half of the 17-team field on the par-70, 6,564-yard course at Old Dominion's host event.
Rakes' three-under tied for the seventh-best second round of the three-day tournament and featured a dominant run through the middle of the course. From holes 3-12, he amassed five birdies and did not bogey once, bringing his 36-hole performance so far to 21 pars and 10 birdies.
Meanwhile, Michael responded to a difficult opening round Sunday with Longwood's second-best team score of the day, finishing one-under with a steady performance that saw him birdie three holes and finish at par or lower on all but two of those. His back nine was bogey-free and featured a pair of birdies, while his par-three average for the day tied for the third-best of all golfers at 2.80.
"I have to give our guys credit," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "We really did a good job to sticking with it today. A lot happened out there, both things we had control over and others we didn't, but we found a way to fight our way to the end and got what we could out of it.
Freshman Scott Jordan shot one-over, junior Brendan Dunphy two-over and senior Ryan Hammer three-over as all five Lancers broke 75. Longwood was one of six teams to have each of its top five players finish three-over or below and as a result had the fifth-lowest team score on the day.
"We had a crazy high number of balls — I'm guessing at least eight or nine — in hazards, mostly from just poor shots," Fillman said. "So we go make double bogey, then find the fortitude to turn right around and go make birdie. That says a ton about us. When the wind and rain came in, that was another opportunity for an excuse, but we continued to fight on. The truth is that our guts held us in it today. We're going to have to play better tomorrow, rather than rely only on toughness. When we have everything working together, I know we can go beat a lot of teams."
Longwood's third and final day of competition at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate will begin at 9:30 a.m. on hole 10 with Michael delivering the Lancers' first drive in his threesome, followed by Jordan at 9:39 a.m., Dunphy at 9:48 a.m., Hammer at 9:57 a.m. and Rakes at 10:06 a.m.
