CLEVELAND, Ohio – A new comedy hitting theaters this weekend may be set in Chicago. But it comes with a taste of Cleveland.
“Later Days,” which stars real-life husband and wife David Walton (“About a Boy,” “New Girl”) and Majandra Delfino (“Roswell,” “Friends with Better Lives”) alongside an ensemble cast, was executive produced by Paul Hubbard, one of the principal owners of Cleveland-based Saucy Brew Works.
“Later Days” finds Walton playing a stay-at-home dad who invites all of his high school friends to a 1980′s-themed surprise party for his bread-winning wife, played by Delfino. The film, which opens Friday, Oct. 29 (including a one-week engagement at Atlas Cinemas at Shaker Square) was written, directed and produced by Brad Riddell & Sandy Sternshein.
Hubbard, who’s had a long-standing relationship with friend Sternshein, joined the film’s production in 2018.
“Sandy and I have been talking for several years about this project,” Hubbard says. “As we got the script all the way finished and polished, I just wanted to put the initial seed capital into the movie and help these guys. I’ve been alongside Brad and Sandy throughout this entire journey.”
“Later Days” is set in Chicago with a cast made up of veteran performers from creative outlets like Second City Mainstage, Steppenwolf and the Goodman Theater. The film plays to Generation X as a homage to Chicago filmmaker John Hughes’ iconic films (“Breakfast Club,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Pretty in Pink,” etc.) with a soundtrack of hit songs from the Eighties.
Yet, even with all the creative elements in place, “Later Days” found itself trying to wrap post-production and gain distribution during the pandemic.
“You know, that was tough. But all core business comes down to the quality of people that you’re backing and the quality of the stories that those people are trying to tell,” says Hubbard. “This is a coming-of-age story about what happens when you turn 40 and maybe your life isn’t quite the way you thought it was going to be. Sandy and Brad did a phenomenal job of telling a story where you really care about the characters.”
Making the connection with Saucy Brew Works, the Cleveland brewery created a satire beer called “Red Fire” that is featured throughout the movie. In addition, “Later Days” is being distributed by Gravitas Ventures, headquartered on Detroit Avenue across the street from Saucy Brew Works’ Ohio City location.
