WAVERLY, Iowa (KWWL) - About a year ago, the Cedar River Park site consisted of dirt hills with many holes to fill. However, fast forward to 2021, it is now a nearly completed ballpark!
Last year, crews were digging out the site to work on the foundation and internal work. Now, the city says it has come down to the finishing touches, from fencing to planting grass seeds.
With previous ballparks prone to flooding, ball diamond task force chair, Jeremy Langner said folks will no longer have to worry about that at Cedar River Park.
"You can see the fields are sloped, the water we would get from a typical rain would just runoff," Langner said, "I'm confident if mother nature works with us and everything goes well, we will be able to play a lot of baseball."
Waverly's Leisure Services Director, Garret Riordan credits the warm weather for the park's progress. However, with seeding being the last major task to complete, he's worried drought conditions may delay the park's completion.
"That's the key to everything is how quick this grass will germinate and grow," Riordan said, "we do have all the diamonds irrigated, so all the outfields should be fine, but outside the fence is going to be a little tougher to get that to grow."
Over four million dollars was invested in this project. Weather permitting, Riordan said Cedar River Park can start hosting games as early as next summer.
