The NFL “silly season” normally happens in the days after the playoffs end, not in the hours leading up to training camp. However, with the Houston Texans Deshaun Watson and Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers, two of the leagues premier passers, completely on the outs with their teams, things could get very wild in the coming hours and days.
Rodgers has been unhappy with the Packers for some time. He and Watson’s names have dominated the off-season chatter, with a myriad of teams linked to trades with the 2 field generals.
Yesterday, in the wake of the Deshaun Watson reports to training camp news, it was leaked that part of Aaron Rodgers’ demands for his return to the Green Bay Packers include bringing back his old favorite slot target, Randall Cobb.
As @wingoz noted, Aaron Rodgers absolutely wants Randall Cobb back with the Packers. Source tells me that desire set in motion the Texans trading for former Bears WR Anthony Miller over the weekend. As Rodgers compromise with GB settles, this trade should happen.

Houston completed the trade for the aforementioned Miller yesterday as well, swapping the Texans 5th round 2022 pick for the 7th round pick of the Chicago Bears.
To acquire wide receiver Anthony Miller, the Texans traded their 2022 fifth-round draft pick and also picked up the Bears' seventh-round draft pick next year

Doing so didn’t seem to make a lot of sense on the surface, but if this is in preparation for a Randall-Cobb-to-the-Packers trade, then the picture comes into focus much faster.
Houston Texans Trade Randall Cobb to the Green Bay Packers
Cobb has been a bit of a sticking point all off-season. He’s scheduled to hit the Texans’ salary cap for $10.47 million this year according to OverTheCap. That makes him the highest paid player on the roster not named Deshaun Watson. He’s scheduled to collect nearly double what wide receiver Brandin Cooks will make in 2021. For a team that needs all the help it can get, paying a slot receiver that sort of cash makes no sense whatsoever.
While Cobb is certainly more valuable to both teams than Anthony Miller, Houston would be smart to ship Cobb to the Packers for just about anything in return. In reality, it will probably happen in a similar manner to the Miller deal, with slightly better compensation in return for Houston. Maybe a 6th or 5th rounder? Maybe...
The Texans currently have Cooks, Keke Coutee, Nico Collins, Andre Roberts, Taiwan Taylor, Miller, Chris Conley, Isaiah Coulter, Chris Moore, Alex Erickson and Donte Moncrief on the roster alongside Cobb. PFF claims it’s the worst wide receiver group in football. But, Cobb doesn’t really make it better or worse, since his bloated contract outweighs his production.
This team certainly will not take twelve receivers into the season, so removing Cobb now is just plain smart business. Hopefully, the Green Bay Packers agree.
Prior to the off-season, Watson made a similar “demand” with Will Fuller V. Watson’s favorite target is now a Miami Dolphin. Hopefully, the Packers are far more interested in placating their superstar quarterback than McEasterby has been in 2021.
