PARMA, Ohio -- The orange barrel onslaught continues in Parma where the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) plans on resurfacing Pearl Road from Snow to Brookpark roads.

“In the last couple years, the city of Cleveland resurfaced Pearl Road,” Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter said. “Starting in Strongsville, Middleburg Heights and currently now Parma Heights, ODOT is resurfacing Pearl Road. So this is really the last piece of the puzzle from Strongsville to Cleveland to get resurfaced.

“We’re glad we’re a part of that ODOT project. We made a request to jump in on that and were added on. That was us being proactive, getting our major roads resurfaced here in the city of Parma.”

The 1.27-mile Pearl Road resurfacing, which is a mill-and-fill project with full-depth repairs as needed and new ADA-compliant curb ramps, has a nearly $2 million cost with ODOT kicking in $1.08 million.

Responsible for $856,000, Parma is using $530,000 in Ohio Public Works Commission funds leaving the city to cover the $326,440 balance.

“We just dropped the final resolution contract with ODOT, which is leading the project with work supposed to begin in early to mid-September this year from Ridge Road to Brookpark Road,” Parma Assistant Engineer James J. Mihelich said.

“We’ll do half the project this year and then finish up the other half in spring before putting the top course of asphalt. We’re also trying to get it done before the three-city -- Parma, Brooklyn and Cleveland -- Ridge Road project from Pearl Road to Flowerdale Avenue starts next year.”

This marks the first time Pearl Road was repaved in nearly two decades. Mihelich said ODOT will be maintaining traffic through the project.

DeGeeter noted Parma, which has roughly 20 square miles of roads, has been busy of late repaving its major thoroughfares in a methodical fashion.

That list in recent years includes repaving Ridge Road from Sprague Road to Pearl Road, Pleasant Valley Road, Broadview Road, Snow Road and W. 54th Street. Also, work currently continues on York and Sprague roads with W. Ridgewood Drive planned for 2022 or 2023.

“Please excuse the orange barrels but once we get through the construction process -- which can be painful for residents and motorists -- we’ll have a brand-new street resurfaced,” DeGeeter said.

“Then we’ll move on to our next projects and continue to try to knock out these major road projects across the city.”
